Default springerbait fans

Does anybody recognize this sb with the spring in the arm? I bought a bunch of these 20yrs ago and have somehow managed to lose all but 2 over the years. I have completely forgotton who made them, I do remember that it was a Nat'l brand and not a homemade. Very productive..the spring gave it a unique throb...much like the old stanley vibra shaft. I'd love to find some more somewhere.

I thought I'd seen it all when it came to spinnerbaits, but that's one I've never seen.

My older brother used to have one of those. He lost it in lake Eufala. No idea where he got it. I just remember because it was so unique and I was there when he lost it. He wasn't happy.

I am descent with the hard baits, but can't say I have ever seen a spinnerbait like that. I did look through some books but not many pictures of spinnerbaits in them.

I asked for some help on a couple of other forums that I visit. This info was provided,

"The bait was made by Manuel Johnson from Missorri around 74-75. He applied for a patent in 75 and received it in 77. Other then that I can't find anymore on the bait." .

May provide enough information to do a little more digging or refresh a memory.

This bait has perplexed me for a while now, I found some additional information recently.

Manuel Johnson Sr.
Thursday, January 17, 2008

BRIDGETON, Mo. -- Manuel Dale Johnson Sr., 67, of Bridgeton, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at DePaul Hospital from an aneurysm followed by a heart attack.

He was born March 4, 1940, the younger of twin boys to Lee Roy and Opal Johnson at the family farm near Advance, Mo. He married Carol Ann Bates.

Manuel and twin brother Daniel were members of Boy Scout Troop 456 in Pond, Mo., which is now Wildwood. Invaluable life-saving instructions were utilized in 1953 when Manuel, 13, and his sister, 9, were critically injured when struck by lightning. Daniel and their father administered artificial respiration, saving their lives.

Manuel was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grover, Mo. He was a 1958 graduate of Ritenour High School in Overland. Manuel's self-taught interest in electrical circuits and mechanics enabled him to maintain, improve and design machinery at a metal plating facility, and later at metal recycling and reclaiming centers. His knowledge led him to a successful consulting service, traveling across the U.S. He designed and built a tram at his lake home.

He was an avid bass fisherman, patenting a fishing lure and inventing an inboard seat-ignition safety switch. Over the years he won or placed well in fishing tournaments and held offices in bass fishing clubs. He devoted much time and effort promoting and enhancing wildlife conservation.

Survivors include his parents, of Advance; his wife; twin brother Daniel (Mary Louise) Johnson of Maryland Heights, Mo.; a sister, LaVerne (David) Johnson-Sample of Patton, Mo.; and younger brother Elvis Johnson of St. Charles, Mo.; one daughter, Christine Weatherford of Wentzville, Mo.; sons Manuel Dale (Sue) Johnson Jr. of St. Ann, Mo., and Michael K. Johnson of Chesterfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren and one step-grandchild; four great-grandchildren; many family members, fishing and hunting friends.

Funeral service was held at Collier's Funeral Home at Bridgeton, Mo., on Dec. 11. Interment followed at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in St. Ann, Mo.

I wasn't a member here when this thread first started. Since it's been brought up ... I have to comment.
I don't know anything about that spinner bait, other than I can see why it's not still available. I like pulling a spinner bait through weeds. For the most part, they can be ripped through ... the spinner shaft being something of a weed guard.
That spring negates almost all the "weedless" aspect. Any weed stem small enough to fit in the spring is going to stick there.
If I had one, I'd probably chuck it after the second or third time I had to clean weeds out of the spring.

When I first saw it I imagined the same thing, come to find out it was just my imagination. The bottom arm of a spinnerbait does most of the weed deflection and if you're fishing a spinnerbait so deep in the weeds that the top arm comes into play, then the split rings-swivel-blades are sure to gather enough weeds without much help from the spring.

I have yet to come up with the name of the bait. I can tell you that Manuel was a FLW and BASS Pro he fished mostly tournaments when they were on LOZ. I did not find any results where he had finished well, but he did participate.

First off I'd like to thank Tav for the great research and info!

With that info I was able to talk with Mary Louise and she in turn is giving my phone number to Manuels boys (she didn't want to give me thiers which I totally understand) but she said either Dan or one of the boys would call me and fill me in.
Dan wasn't home and Mary didn't know the name of lure.

So we'll wait and see if they call.

Again, thanks Tav and it was fun trying to figure it out.

Ken, not there yet but getting closer.
