I just started really having success on buzzbaits this year. My favorite is a Cavitron buzzbait. It is designed so that the skirt and head ride slightly under the surface while the blade buzzes across. I have also had great luck with a Strike King KVD buzzbait. But Nobass sent me a buzzbait made by The Cutthroat Lure Co. that has really produced for me. It's not as fancy as the more expensive brands but it seems to catch fish every bit as well if not more so. As for when, my best times are in low light times. Early morning, evening, night, and overcast days. And I fish them over shallo0w weedbeds, over logs, around brush, along emergent weeds, anywhere there is cover very close by.

When? Anytime spring through fall, sunny or overcast. However, many anglers don't associate topwaters with sunshine. Where? Like Keithdog said, over and around shallow cover. I use a trailer hook on all of mine, but not everyone thinks it's necessary. Buzzbaits are are also my favorite topwater when there's a good chop on the water.

There are lots of brands out there that do very well. You'll need to decide what size bait, color or skirt and blade and what type of blade, like two-winged or three-winged, or double-bladed.

It's easy to get carried away with any lures, but I think it's important to keep buzzbaits simple. I carry three colors - white, black, chartreuse.

I like Booyah's Pip-squeak buzzbaits, but want to try some Cavitron as I've they're great.

So what are you going to use if they don't want to hit the buzzbaits

I agree, there are some baits you can plan on throwing all day long with reasonable hope of success. A buzzbait generally isn't one of them. There certainly are days that are the exception but as a general rule, buzzbaits aren't an all day long bait. If you want to throw blade baits all day, I would probably add a spinnerbait and Chatterbait into the mix.

Edit, I see you do have a backup plan, sounds good.

Like has been said above buzzbaits are at their best from spring through the end of fall. I throw either white or black depending on water color. Throw them in any area you would throw a spinnerbait or shallow crankbait. They are really good around shallow wood or laydowns.

I always like throwing buzz baits around the rip rip on points, the big chunks of gravel piled up as a form of a sea wall..pretty much anywhere you can throw a topwater you can throw a buzz bait. Scott, pay attention to when your buzz bait hits the water, you dont want to let it sink at all, you might want to start reeling bout a half second before the bait actually hits the water. Good luck

If I'm fishing a buzzbait it's going to be a Cavitron, probably a 3/8oz black one. I've caught several big fish and won a few wednesday night tournaments this summer with them. Oh yea, and I caught this 6 fish 22lb string of bass on nothing but a Cavitron.

Cavitrons have worked very well for me.. points, submergent grass & pad edges seem productive

Right on, Anthony! I was reading this and thinking exactly the same thing! Then I saw that you already captured it!

I own 3 different color buzzbaits but all of them are the original Lunker Lure. I pull the rivets off when I buy them, soak them in Clorox overnight and reinstall. That's the best way to break in a buzzbait IMHO. Gives that perfect sound right away without wearing them in.

Colors

Black/Black Blade
Black/Gold Blade
White/Silver Blade

I throw them just about anywhere, but have best luck paralleling cover.

I still hold new bb's out the truck window on the way home from the store regardless of brand but after spinning the blades clean off of a couple going down the interstate I now limit it to surface streets. I love the sound a broken in buzzbait makes on the cast and retrieve.
