Two footballs just in time for the Super Bowl!!!
I usually concentrate on catching panfish & trout when ice fishing, but was very happy with my trip to a local Finger Lake about 10 miles from my house last Saturday morning.
I was targeting yellow perch and had a tip from a friend about where I could get into a few good ones. Turns out, I was fishing in the wrong spot, but I was happy with the results and can't wait to kayak fish this spot after ice-out in a couple of months! First smallie was this nice 3lber... ...followed shortly by this Super Bowl worthy PIG of a football... Both were caught using a Rapala Jigging Rap tipped with a small fathead minnow in about 20 fow.

I would say you were in the right spot, those toads just beat you to the perch. They probably ate a few and scared the rest off.

I wished that I would have had some scales, but I wasn't planning on catching a pb smallmouth that day. I only had time for a quick measure because I wanted to get her back into the water ASAP. She was 22" or better - later confirmed by using screen calipers on photos. I am confident that this toad of a fish broke the 5lb mark.
You can bet where I'm going to be parked out on the water after ice out... Don't you know it! Especially when you are expecting a light tug from a perch. Absolutely. I love largemouth, but like some folks, the smallmouth is my favorite, both for beauty and fight.

Dak,
If she was really 22", and clearly with Winter fat on, then I would say she was 6-6.5 lbs. Many a Dale Hollow fisherman has cried at having to release a 20.5 inch, 5.5 lb Smallie.

Update: This last Saturday, I went fishing for the perch again on the same lake, and found the right spot - caught these three nice 10-12.5" perch. Unfortunately, my limited 2hr perch fishing trip was again interrupted by a nice smallmouth - this one topped out over 18". Those pesky smallmouth! Again, these were caught on Rapala Jigging Raps in 20 fow.

That's pretty amazing, catching those fish with that little orange doo-hickey, especially through a little hole in the ice....
Nice smallies, man....good job...
