Default High school football playoffs

Our local high school football team ran their record to 10-0 last night with a 49-28 win over a conference rival in the section championship game. We will play in the state tourney next weekend for the first time since 1999, and of all things, it will be against another of our conference rivals, but one that we didn't play during the regular season because it was our year to miss them in the scheduling rotation. Back to last night's game -- our fullback ran 25 times for 116 yards...not a bad night. But get this, our halfback carried 33 times for a school-record 301 yards and a school-record tying 5 TDs! And here's a statistical oddity for you. The other team's halfback ripped off a 65 yard TD run midway through the second quarter, but finished the night with 11 carries for 55 yards. It was a chilly night, but it was fun to be able to watch the team celebrate on our home field after the win.

We are up 20-0 starting the 4th quarter, but just missed a FG to end the 3rd. Our RB is over 200 yards at this point...a great follow-up to his 300+ yard game last week.

Sounds like a pretty darn solid team on BOTH sides of the ball! They got much of a passing game?

I believe our QB set the single season school record for yards and TDs this season, although we have typically been a run-happy team in the past. The RB I mentioned above is only a junior and we have a junior lineman who plays both ways, set the school record for sacks in a season (not sure how many) and is getting looks from D1 programs.

We won 28-0 tonight and advanced to the state semi-finals next Friday afternoon! Our halfback (Jr.) ran 44 times for 276 yards and 3 more TDs, setting our school single season TD record (21 or 22, not sure which). And he wasn't even the starter at the beginning of the season.

The opponent came into the game averaging over 220 yards passing with 2+ TD passes per game, but we held them to 9 of 32 passing for 60 yards and we had 6 sacks and 2 interceptions.

Until this year, MN had 6 classifications for football. Smallest was 9-man, then up the ladder from 1A to the big schools in 5A. We were in 5A. This year they moved the biggest 32 schools up to a new 6A class and reclassified things below that to make up for the movement of the biggest schools. We are still in 5A, but the team that used to beat us in the section finals almost every year is now up in 6A and they are still alive also. They, too, are in the state semi-finals next weekend and play a team they already beat 35-0 about a month ago.

Don't know if you saw my post a few weeks back, but in week 5 of our now 11-0 season, we had a miracle comeback road win against our arch-rival just 15 minutes up the interstate. We were down 41-7(!) at the half, scored 5 second half TDs to tie it at 41, missed the go-ahead XP kick due to a bad snap, forced a punt, and drove down and kicked a game-winning 28 yard FG with a couple minutes left to pull out a 44-41 win. Pretty crazy, huh?

Your boys are having a heck of a year for sure. I wish I'd been able to see that HUGE comback you described. Best of luck at state semi next week!

And it's not just the football team. It's been a spectacular fall sports season here. Boys cross country won conference and section and finished 4th out of 16 teams at state, girls volleyball won conference and section before losing twice at state, boys soccer qualified for state for the first time ever by beating 3 teams in sections that they had lost to during the regular season (our goalie, who made the all-state team, is also the kicker on the football team), and one girl from our tennis team made it to state also.

Our hometown team (my son plays on) is still in the playoffs. We play a pretty good team This Friday night (4A btw). Not sure how good we will do we have a very young team, pretty much all sophomores, we will have a state championship caliber team the next 2 years, maybe this year. We have a sophomore running back with 1,463 yards and 19 TD's so far this year, not to bad of numbers for a sophomore in 4a High School Football.

Our local team did not make the play-offs for the first time in at least a decade.

The state semi-final game this afternoon was an ABSOLUTE THRILLER, and we ended up winning 30-27 when we scored a TD and 2pt conversion with 29 seconds left in the game! I will post more details later when I have more time...

Yes, we (Owatonna) are now in the state championship next Saturday afternoon. The team we played today, St. Thomas Academy, is a perennial football powerhouse. I believe they were ranked #4 in the final regular season poll and we were #3. We dominated all the stats, but we had several turnovers and turned the ball over on downs a deep in STA territory a couple of times.

We ran 88 plays to their 41, gained 379 yards to their 166, and had 25 first downs to their 9. But they gashed us for TD drives on their opening drive of each half and had a 25 yard INT return for a TD on our first possession of the second half. At that point STA had erased our 16-10 halftime lead and taken a 24-16 lead and had all the momentum. Our boys answered right away with a key TD drive to get back in it at 24-22.

After STA added a FG, here is how five consecutive series late in the 4th quarter, all on St. Thomas Academy's half of the field, ended: an STA interception, an Owatonna fumble, an STA blocked punt, an Owatonna interception, an STA fumble...and then we finally took advantage and went 27 yards in 7 plays to take a 28-27 lead with 0:29 left. We added the 2-point conversion and then held on for a couple plays to win it 30-27.

Pretty much all the "meaningful" school records have been set this year: passing yards in a season and career, rushing yards and TDs in a season (by a junior), receiving yards in a season, sacks in a season and career (by a junior), highest scoring team ever, and most wins by a team (12). I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones I know for sure.

Our opponent for next Saturday's Class 5A championship game won't be decided until the other semi-final game is played tomorrow, but it will likely be the #1 team in our class (Totino-Grace), who it seems like is in the finals every year. Some "experts" say they are the best team in the entire state this year, including the 32 biggest schools in Class 6A. We have been to 2 state finals in school history and lost them both. Hopefully the result will be different this time, but no matter how it turns out, it will be a fun game to attend and it has been a GREAT season.
