Drop-Shot/Shakey Head Rod

As some of you may have seen, I have my older, Medium-Light St.Croix for sale. It is a little too under-powered, and too long for the fishing I do, so I'm going with something shorter and more powerful. I'll mainly be fishing 1/8-5/16 oz. Drop-Shot and Shakey Head Rigs. I'm only looking to spend around $110-150 on the rod, as $90 will come from the rod I sell, (If I sell it).

What should I be looking for in terms of length, weight, power, and action for a DS and SH rod?

Use it for a dropshot rod and get a MH spinning rod for shakey head. I use a ML Falcon Low Rider Dropshot rod and a MH Falcon Cara for shakey head. Different tools for different jobs.

I'm taking your advice and buying another rod, using this one for the Drop-Shot. I tested different weight weights on it, and anywhere from 1/16 to 3/8 oz. is a managable weight for that rod. Anyway, that gives me one more excuse to buy another rod!

I have the Lamiglas Dropshot Special....7'0 1/8-3/8oz. Medium/Fast. Its a killer rod with a great tip and solid backbone....retails around $120.00!

I have the exact same rod and agree with you 100%.

I was thinking of trying the shakeys with it, but have heard others say a typical DS rod isn't "gutsy" enough. According to the Lami catalog it should be, and I would hope they're right. Have you used yours for shakey head fishing?

I ahve used it for a shakey/darterhead and its OK. It gets the job done. But it is only at select times that i throw something like that. With spring on the way, I usually put all my spinning gear away and start bringing out the big dogs....Jigs, blades, topwater and swimbaits!!!

LL, I'd go with a shimano Compre. I'm gonna be using that in a 7' M rod for both my dropshot and shakey head.

OK, here's what I am thinking so far....

Rod: 6'9'', Spinning, Medium-Heavy, Fast Action

Reel: Spinning, 2000-2500

Line: Power Pro 20 lb. w/ 10 lb. fluorocarbon leader.

Sound about right?

I'll hopefully be getting it as soon as I return from Alaska. I'm saving for a Gor-Tex suit as we speak, so that will down me around $450, but as soon as I buy it, I'm going to start saving for my rod. When I get back from Alaska I will hopefully have enough dough left to buy it, or the rod or reel at least.

Lunk, I have two different rods for drop shot and shakey head, both are woo davies extreme, drop shot a 6'8" ml and the shakey head a 7' mh and the good news is I think there on sale at bps right now for $59.95 each. That's almost half price. Very good rods, love them. Hope this helps.

LL, as for the reel, I'd go with a 1500. Maybe Shimano Symetre. (one of my personal favorite spinning reels) With 20lb braid equal to 6lb mono, you'll be using a lot less on the smaller reel and be saving money.

I go with G.Loomis "shakey head" rod. Granted its like $215.00 but for shakey heading it's got loads of sensitivity. You can feel the bait hopping along the bottum in 20' of water.
Expensive, yes but you'll be glad you got it, if thats your premiere domain. If not then stick with the lesser expensive rods.
