Default New Rod and Reel Question

I just bought an Abu Garcia 5600WS Baitcaster and a Conolon rod , the rods a 7' Medium Heavy Action , is this a good set up or not ? I know I have to learn to fish with a Baitcaster and backlashes are a *#*@^ but I wanted to get something decent off the get go... I also got Stren Duratuf 12# line.

For the first while, buy cheap line, because you will get bad backlashes, and have to respool. It will take a long tim, and I mean long. I have been practicing thirty or more minutes a day, for more than a month, and have not perfercted it yet.

CMorg-take a look here:

That's the best site I've seen for setting up a baitcaster to perform correctly. Your combo sounds like a good setup.

Yeah, printed that out for future reference, great site reb. You've used that twice tonight, more people buying baitcasters, huh.

I would tighten up your tensions on the sides of your baitcasters and use heavy baits with not a whole lot of wind resistance for starters.....like heavy spoons, jigs, compact stuff of that nature until you get the hang of it.....then start to throw the lighter stuff.....baitcasting is hard at first but its definately worth it...I remember when I first threw a caster I had some problems.....don't get too worried about really winging it out there too at first... make short smooth casts....

What worked for me was going out in my yard, practicing, with a sinker, and a bobber, so I could see where I was casting, and then at the lake, use a heavy buzzbait or spinnerbait.
