How bout' Methiolate Senkos (see the "Methiolate" thread under Tips and Techniques). I don't know if they will work for Smallmouth but I had an impressive experience with them for Largemouth.

try using crawfish crankbaits and plastics..they eat alot of them...roostertails and other inline spinners work good for smallmouths too...also, 4 inch senkos are good..

Crawfish crankbaits, yum crawdads, buzzbaits, 3 inch grubs, and 3 inch tubes, and jerkbaits are what i use on my trip to minnesota. The lake I fish is very clear but i have never fished it at night. I hope this help and best of luck to you.

Make sure the crawdad crankbait runs deeper than the water, so its hitting bottom and making a mud trail. Try firetiger.

I'm still new to smallmouth fishing, but I have had great luck with yellow spinnerbait with a hint of red in the color. When the water is muddy, or when light fades, I have heard it is good to use lures with lots of red in them, since red is the last color of the spectrum to fade away in poor light.

Believe it or not but a jointed black jitterbug. Make sure it's so dark you could barely see your hand in front of you.(No full moon nights). Toss that baby out there and retrieve just fast enuf to make her gurgle. Better have a tight grip on the rod at all times to. Just about the time you drift off into la la land (And it will happen night fishin) one will hit the thing so hard it'll rip the rod clean outa your hand. Also be sure and use a ball bearing snap swivel a dang jitterbug will put a butt load of twist in your line if you don't.

Cotton Cordell Big O cranks in firetiger or a craw color if fishing rivers. 3.5" Tubes in pumpkinseed. If they are deep. I like to jig a mister twister curlytail grub in front of them. I also hear that the Luckycraft sammy is a great topwater for smallies but i have yet to try them.

My 3 favorite colors for night lures are black, black/chartreuse, and deep purple. I haven't seen many multi-color tubes but using black/chartreuse Berkley PowerBait crawfish seem to work very well at night. Yesterday I went out and was out till the sun went down using pumpkinseed colored plastics and caught 11 fish in 3 hours. Then as night fell the fish stopped biting. I threw on the black/chartreuse crawfish and the fishing went back to how it was before the sun went down.

My God, I was lied to by that religeous fisherman on PBS about what colors to use in poor light, perhaps he just meant to use red in murky waters then?

Either that or it only works where he was in Florida, long ways from the Mississinewa and Salamonie.

fishie, if you ever get to ky lake in pre spawn look at all the points and secondary points that have pea gravel, and work a jerk bait in those areas, later when they hit the buck brush you can flip a craw, or spinnerbait or rattletrap in score big...3rd week in arpil-mid may..give or take a few weeks either way depending on the timing of spring..water temp51-57 ish
