It doesn't matter if your throwing a 1/32th ounce jig or a 1 ounce jig, the methods of retrieve are similiar...you can hop it back a few feet and let it fall, or you can just drag it on the bottom a few feet and wait, or move it nad let it sink and then twitch the rod tip a few times...other times you can target a specific target and let it sit there..the bite feels just like a worm hit, just set the hook harder.

What colors for water clarity, and do rattles and trailers really help.

Here is something for you to try. Works good for me. I use a 3/8oz. black and blue Rattling Flat Eye Jig made by Stanley tipped with a plastic crawdad. I cut off part of the tail so the trailer don't hang too far behind the jig, creating a smaller taget. I also trim the fiber weedguards a bit shorter than they come, just enough to keep it weedless. Using my 7 foot medium heavy rod and casting reel with 20 pound line, I pull up next to some lilly pads and use short flips and work the jig in and around the pads. Just try to make it look alive, swimming it slowly, with short soft pump of the rod and such. The hits are usually violent and come quickly if the bass is anywhere nearby so be prepared as soon as the jig hits the water. Good luck.

I also, have not caught a single fish in my life on a jig. Sometimes, I'll go out on a dock surounded by weeds, throw it into holes, and hop it up and down, and from what I've read, this is the way to do it. It could just be that everyone that fishes this lake, fishes from the dock, except for a few.

try fishing it fast, with short hops all the way back to the boat. if you do this, you cause the bass to either eat your bait or let it go by,sort of like a spinnerbait, except on the bottom of the lake.

Cool idea skeeter, I've never tried that retrieve before but it makes sence. I would think a heavier jig would work well for that approach. Gonna try that.

Guys, when fishing a jig, you want to remember that the jig imitates a crayfish. Crayfish move forward when feeding and move backward very quickly when fleeing. Crayfish do not hop! Be sure to drag it slowly as if it is feeding and every so often give it a short pop to imitate the fleeing mode. Fish feeding on crayfish will respond to a fleeing crayfish.

I would like to know some of yalls most productive colors, brands, weights of jigs, for muddy and clear water, and also, what you think is the best trailer, because I want to get into jig fishing this winter, and hopefully be proficient by spring, iin case my soft plastics, or crankbaits arent producing.

I always throw a greenish punkin seed tube or craw, with a 1/8th ounce to flip with...or heavier

I'm guessing dragging them along the bottom, with a crawfish trailer, would be the way to go, I will get some natural crawfish colors, and a pumpkin seed, and maybe a black one, for muddy water.

I like my jigs (whod-da thunk it?), and I like 'em in black/blue, it's my most productive color. Black/red is probably my second most productive.

the best advise for jig throwing is to look for a "bassy" spot, like heavy falled timber, or a stump, or holes in the mat of vegetation..
today I just pulled the jig instead of vibrating or hopping it, and got one fish off some tree tops...put more emphasis on targets to throw to, let it set, then lift the rod tip back to you and move the jig a foot or two and let it rest, then repeat..
I've seen many a tournie angler just make one flip to a good looking spot, and if nothing happens, he'll just swing it back to the boat and make another cast, whereas I think You should work a area(target) and pick it apart, it usually pays..look for timber and any shade spot to throw the jig or tube.

Definately take JB's advice, and if you still don't hook up, be sure to throw it in the colder months. I pretty much just fish a jig and plastic in the winter, I'll fish a crank a bit then, but not much.

Yeah, I want to be able to throw something besides a soft plastic, or a crankbait with success, and jigs seemed like it wouyld be good to know, plus since the fish like them in the colder omonths, it'll be good practice.

Try a small pond, get a chartreuse balck back 2-4' diving crank, and throw it. It works best in clearer water, when you get a bite, stop twitch it twice, wait then set the hook.
