Default Wheeler-Wilson

I have been away since friday at wheeler and wilson lakes in extreme northwest alabama, which is one possible site for the 2010 get together although we are a good ways off I think from deciding. I wanted to get some fishing in back where I learned to fish, and also see again whether or not I though this place could handle all of us.

Here are some pictures cause its worth more than me just talkin

Wheeler dam. Lots of great fishing right here at the dam, this place turns out 5-6 pound smallmouth every day.

I saved the best for last. This is my new PB smallmouth caught yesterday evening at Wilson lake on a strike king crankbait in 6 feet of water near a submerged concrete lock. Weight was easily 5 pounds, and my thumb after handlinging didn't have mere bass thumb abbrasions, no sir...I was bleeding under the nail from handling this bad boy.

Wow WTL.

That smallie is amazing. You wouldn't have to twist my arm too hard to get my vote for that place.

The cabin area is very laid back. I walked the grounds and I could see us renting a few cabins in the same area and having cookouts at the grills and pits they provide. I even saw a tent set up next to a cabin.

Inside the cabins you get a king and 2 smaller beds, full kitchen, TV with dish network (nobody better come to watch tv though) and 2 leather couches, front and back porches for $70 a night tax included. Divide that 3 ways and its almost so cheap as to make camping not desirable imo. As stated the cabin is 150 yards from the wheeler ramp and 200 yards from the wilson ramp, what I like personally is the variety of fishing. Wilson is a pretty clear deep lake, wheeler is a lot like ky lake, but there are shallow areas to fish there too and you can also wade for stream bass in the area. The dam tailwater is such an obvious spot thats right there that even if you arent good at finding the fish on the general lakes, you know there are always fish below the dam. Also the shore fishing at the dam is very good as the water runs right by the bank.

Looks like a great place! Those are some nice fish too, congrats on the small mouth!

About it being the next get together; It may and may not work out for us, since it would be in the extreme norther part of bama, my dad said we wouldn't do north of it. But it's possible if he sees some good pics! But seeing how cheep the cabins are, it may work out! WTL, what's the address of the camp sight.. you know?

Oh and if we did go, would we be able to fish out of one of y'alls boats?

Well, I certainly hope the water runs right by the bank. Doesn't it have to?

Like I said...I am sold. But how HAWT is it there in April? I like fishin', but feeling like a piece of bacon fat sizzlin' in a cast iron skillet is the suck.

NoFear, here's a quick breakdown of the average temps in Decatur, AL, which is right off of Wheeler. Scroll to the bottom, and you'll see a graph. Looks like we're looking at 72-80 degrees in April and May. I think we can live with that.

http://www.idcide.com/weather/al/decatur.htm

I like this idea, WTL. Yes, it's too early to plan the trip, but I like the idea anyway.

Nice Smallie, I need to specifically start targeting some bronzebacks. There are plenty to be found around here...

as bro love said. this is the top running spot for the 3rd or is it the 4th annual bassfishin.com get together event. if anyone else has a place they would rather go, by all means start getting info and things started now. we have a long time till the event, but it never hurts to start planning now. if this is the place everyone wants, lisa and i and bro love will host it. i like this place, but i liked kentucky and guntersville too. hahahahahaha. i don't care where we go, just so we go,lmao.

Gawd...why did we open this can of worms? Now I'm already going nuts in anticipation...and it's like 9-10 months away.

Well I still wanna go to lake toho, but that's to far for a lot of of folks, and we can go further.... How about G-ville again? What are some good lakes in Georgia? There's Hartwell, but that's not much further than Wheeler. There's West Point. There's a few Ideas, what do you guys think?

Hey bama, and any one else in Alabama, what are y'all fave lake other than wheeler and G-ville?

I don't think the temps will be bad, hell it was like 100 degrees at guntersville!

I don't know if we'd be able to come all the way to alabama again though.

I can suggest a place or two. Of course it would mean a short 2500 mile drive, the need for most to spend about 200 on out of state licenses, and a ridiculous tourism tax on the rooms.
Other than that, it will be great!!

Thanks zook!

Ya, I'll have to say that wheeler/wilson do sound the best.... I'd love to meat BB, and bama, and zooker, and...... you get it. So I think that wheeler/willson sounds best, it about right in the middle of every body (sept BB ). I should able to make it if that's where it's gonna be... but as y'all know, I'll have to check with my pops! And I dunno if it would be just my dad, my older bro, and I, the whole gang my come (5 people, I doupt we'll all come though). Ya, April or may sounds great to me, spinnerbaits should be killer around then!

Haha, Cassidy...you've been in Kalifornistan too long. Temporary licenses in most midwest/southern states are cheap. Average around $10/day for out of staters (not sure about Alabama specifically...I'll check). Our "tourism taxes" are not too bad either. Take a look at the prices WTL was talking about for the cabins. They are cheap to the point of being ridiculous.

Travelling costs would definitely put a big dent in your left butt cheek though...maybe the long-haulers could work out some sort of car-pooling arrangement to cut costs?
