Default Can I aim a DI transducer at the shore?

In other words would it be possible to take the transducer on say a down imaging sonar unit and point it to the side of the boat so you'd essentially get a side scan reading from it??

What I'm wondering is, could I build some sort of swivel mount for the transducer that would allow me to use a down imaging unit as normal, but then when I pull up to my fishing area swivel the transducer to the side and use it as a sort of side scan.....Any thoughts??

Different freq than the side but yes,but still just one area, with an inaccurate depth reading then.I have taken a single beam sidefinder bottom line and turned it down and yes as well worked, however it was designed to filter out shore so does so to bottom.
The down imaging will have a lot less area its showing even to the side, than a true tri or quad beam sidefinder, and be actually less usefull than in its normal mode, unless for a special peek at something under something.Side finders work under docks, barges etc due to side operation but being multibeam they also have the same down imaging built in,thus why sometimes a puck designed for down imaging works in a down imaging mode as on a sf ,wont give a sf image only the down imaging yet all can be beamed in any direction if say on the troller loosen and slide around.
It wont replace the expensive sf,and wont do the same job,yet will work sideways just read a barge as depth possibly as thats the direction its aimed.
How do I know this my bottom line is on a collar set manually for 5 deg by book i have mine set less, have also used the di bottom line with same puck, and turned them in every direction also have a sw and two can look either side but not bottom as its a true sf and omini directional.Yet can be turned down just not as usefull as not built for that.

I was just thinking out of the box, when I asked about this, and it appears I'd just have to try this to see how it might work......I'd sure love to have one of those side scan sonars, but at their current price point that won't happen unless I win the lottery, and since I don't play thats prolly not gonna happen...lol.

I think we're gonna keep watchin the down imaging units to see how much cheaper those get, and hopefully we can splurge for one in the near future....It sure would be nice to get a clear picture of whats underwater in the places I fish.
