Default What if?

you could get a freshwater baitcaster that you could adjust speed similar to these,

I think it would be a great concept for a flat as opposed to round and smaller reel. Use same for burning a lipless and crawling a jig.

Good concept indeed, I know allot of salt water guys who use these. I think they could do well in the bass world once people got past their baits toward it:

1: They'd be heavy, and people would steer away from them
2: They couldn't be as low profile as other reels due to the extra hardware
3: People wouldn't by them thinking their'd be just more stuff on it break/fail

I'm sure they'd be versatile, and fine performers as well!

That's why we carry TWENTY rods and reels. Heck with switching speeds on a reel, just buy two identical rods, same reel with different gears and all you do is put one down and pick the other up. Problem solved.

I also would not, as your example suggests, use the same rod for burning a trap AND crawling a jig, but that's me. I do have identical cranking rods for traps, one with a 7.1 and the other a 6.3. That is the beauty of owning a bass boat with HUGE rod lockers.

It will be an adjustment for me, not having the big boat any more but I'll manage.
