Must-have Lures
Guys, I got to thinking (yes, I know that can be a dangerous thing for me to do ) after Ken put up the rod selection thread that we have a lot of new fishermen coming on the boards who are asking what baits/lures to use, so why not a thread about lures that a beginner needs to have in his tackle box?
Here are mine-in no particular order: Rat-L-Trap, chrome with a blue back A medium running crankabit in a crawfish color and a shad color A shad color square bill shallow running crankbait A white spinnerbait with 2 blades and a chartreuse spinnerbait with a single Colorado (round) blade A soft plastic stick bait like a Senko, Tiki Stick or YUM Dinger in watermelon seed color Zoom Super Flukes in Smokin' Shad color A chrome/black back Heddon Tiny Torpedo Feel free to add yours.

well, some ribbontail worms in green pumpkin. green pumpkin is the best all around color and will catch fish anywhere in the US. also, junebug is a good all around color too. i have to agree with reb on the rest of the lures, that would be a good selection to start fishing with. one thing to remember is,keep it simple! ya dont need every lure in the store to catch bass! just keep it simple and you will catch more fish.

Poppers, particularly the Rapala Skitter pop. For those of us in the know, there is no strike like a topwater stirke.
Drop shot worms: Robo Worms Reaction Innovations Flirt worms You guys have the other bases covered.

Firetiger bigger bodied crankbaits for those over cast days.
Also any variation of green/punkin seed or summer craw pattern for 3 1/2 tubes and baby paca craws, or zoom vibra craws. I like the blueback shad (rapala shadrap)#5 and #7 or 8. Reyburn red cordell spot or Lewis ratLtrap in red or crome. Any jig that is brown / orange or black n blue with a pork trailer. Manns jellyworm in junebug Culprit tequila sunrise or red shad worm. or 4 inch redshad or bluefleck power worm. A gene larew green craw with orange pinchers has gotten me a paycheck before too. A black n silver rogue, popR, tiny torpedo works just fine. A white bottom spook with green back. White horney toad or green/orange mix. Any 1/4 white single colorado blade spinnerbait, or tandem willow with hammered blades, or any combo of willow#4 with a colorado up front. I had great luck with the tiki lizard last spring, an prefer the watermelon red shad tiki stick. |

I'm curious, the Baby -1 was mentioned more than once and I have yet to get a nibble on mine (green back, white bottom). Any particular time or place to use it? Particular retrieves?

any choked out pond or lake where the hydrilla is almost to the top of the water...the manns minus one only goes a few inches below the surface.
Many forum members are pond fishermen, so it comes in handy when the horny toad bites isn't working and most other crankbaits will dive and collect grass on the hooks. |

You must have a popper, shallow-mid depth crank, t-rig, jig, spinnerbait and a c-rig. Specific baits are pretty much preferences, but to me these are the things to have!

Neither have I, Raul ! Seriously, I'm just thinking in terms of a sort of starter kit for somebody just getting into bass fishing. And we all know it is just a beginning . And for those who don't know, Raul is the man that coined the term, "bait monkey". No kidding.

That is a most dificult question to answer. For a starter pack I would recommend, not in any specific order.
1. White bladed 1/2 oz. spinnerbait with white skirt. 2. Manns baby 1- in baby bass color. 3 Yamamoto senko in #214 Smoke/BLK,BLU&GLD (I call it bluegill color) 4 Baby paca craw in summer craw color. 5 Culprit 6" worm in Red shad. In my opinion, that is the best it gets, I would also include the Kalin grub , but most people aren't going to give it a chance, because its not in their line of thinking as a fish catcher.P N J |

"Must have lures" = everything that I don't already have in my tackle box and then some back-up and extra back-up of my favorite lures.
In trying to be funny, I think I made some sense (at least to me). That is, I think the best lures are the ones that I buy over and over again. These continuously purchased lures include: Cranks - Rapala DT-4 and DT-6, Norman Suspending Cranks (think it dives 8-`10, and Bomber 100 and 200s Plastics - 5" Senkos in Baby Bass, Green Pumpkin, and Watermelon, 5" Senko Lite in Methiolate (they don't make a 5" Senko in methiolate, if you want the 5" size, you must purchase the "lites"), Wave Worms Lizard in Sweet Potatoe Pie, Green/White Strike King Tubes, Green Pumpkin Strike King tubes, twin tail hula grubs (for Smallmouth), and Case Salty Shads Topwaters - Jointed Black Jitterbug, Heddon Torpedo, poppers (any brand), any buzzbaits Spinnerbaits - black with silver blade and white with silver blade Jerkbaits - some suspending jerkbaits (Rapala X, Husky Jerk, and Smithwicks) |
