Small, And I Mean Small Farm Pond Problem
I Fish In A Small Pond Back Home, And There Are Quite Large, Up To 9 Or 10 Lb Bass In It. The Problem That I Have Is That About Half Of The Year You Cannot Fish It Because Of The Weedbeds Are Thick And Solid From Top To Bottom. I Had A Small Homemade Boat, Till It Sank... Just Some Barrels And Boards Slapped Together. That Was Fun While It Lasted And I Could Get Past The 15 Feet Of Weeds. Now I Am Stuck To The Shore. Is There Any Way That I Could Get Past This?? Any Lures Or Anything?

I have seen someone catch one, it was honestly the biggest bass I had ever seen. They sure are picky, they have been caught and released to many times.

IF, I used to fish a pond like that. When it gets full of weeds it limits what you can use, no doubt. When it gets like that I throw a weedless, weightless soft plastic bait. I use a stickbait like a Tiki Stick or a Yum Dinger the most:
with a fluke-type bait like a Zoom Super Fluke second: Rig both like you would a Texas rig: But use no weight. These baits are both heavy enough to throw without weight and will not hang up in the weeds. They will also slowly sink in the open spaces. I've caught a bunch of fish on these 2 baits. For the stickbaits I've caught most on watermelon seed, baby bass/pearl laminate, and with Tiki Sticks watermelon chartreuse swirl like the picture shows and baby bass/pearl swirl. The best Fluke colors are baby bass, smokin' shad and albino, but just about any color of either bait will work. Be sure to watch your line-you often won't feel a hit-your line will just start to tighten up or it will get 'heavy". I cast them out, set them settle, and work them with gentle twitches of the rod tip.

Try wading. I used to wade alot, barefoot in the summer, and with chest waders. It can be very effective. YOu can cast perfectly down the edge of the weeds

Get a heavy jig, and punch through some of those weeds, and shake it.

Look for any holes that may let sun in through the mat...we fish alot of areas that are really covered with hyrdilla and a top mat of vegetation...the fish hang under the mat almost all summer and like everyone has recommended, a frog, senko, or jig is the ticket..
the bass tend to be really black/backed from staying under the mat for so long..plus on the frog or horny toad, be prepared to be startled when they come up through the mat and hit...many times they miss the lure, go back and throw again in the same area, they've "shown" themselves to ya. |

I you own the pond or can get permission, you can by aquatic herbicide. I have a pond that got completely taken over with lilly pads. Most bass fisherman thinks that is good, but it actually shades out the bottom, which can effect the growth of other aquatic life. And as everyone knows, the bottom of a food chain is the most important, and in a aquatic ecosystem, it's that small algae and invertebrates.

I already had that idea, but the owner does not give a hoot and does not want anything in the line of herbixcides in his pond. he is kind of a disgruntled man, i got permission to fish it forever and only have stopped to talk to him once and he said that he doesn't want to do anything with it.

wading MIGHT be a possibility, but please, be very cautious and do not, I REPEAT, DO NOT try to wade through the thick weeds, you might step into a deep hole and end up getting caught in the weeds. I know 2 people who have died this way. They weren't wading but when their boat capsized they tried to return to shore, both ended up drowning and were found in thick weed beds.

You might also try a weighted rake head to pull some of the weeds in, making holes or lanes you can cast into. The link leads to a drawing of one of these rakes, but at $130, I would build my own.

These are all great ideas but my ponds have this slimy grass (if you know the name let me know) so even if a weedless worm gets into it the worm comes out looking like a hulla girl. Any suggestions?

probably hydrilla or milfiol H&M. Try super flukes, topwater frogs, plastics.... those things would work.

Hydrilla isn't slimy..its an actual weed that will just hang you up and choke out waterways if it grows too much.
Thats hydrilla. Milfoil isn't really slimy, either and is about the same kinda problem as Hydrilla as far as fishing, goes. thats what milfoil looks like in the water. I'd suspect that he's talking about your good ole algae or "pond scum". There are a few places I fish that have big "clouds" of the stuff around most of the shoreline. The only way to make holes in it is to drag through it with a hook, a rake, or anything else but then you're changing the whole ecosystem and habitat if you remove large quantities. When Icome to the scum, I fish stuff weightless and let it float and land on top of the "clouds". Sometimes you can't see em, so just stay weightless and fight the battle. |

i would use a tube bait with, not a weighted jighead, but like a texas rigged style worm with a Gammy hook and a slipshot weight or not one at all but that can handle a lot of thick cover.

Take reb and nitro911's advice, the stuff down here is like a forset underwater. You may lose a few at first cause they have a tendency to shake the hook under the weeds, but itll come to you.
