what . . . you are fishing a river and no smallmouth pics . . . how is that possible . . .

BTW the Oconee river looks like it has some good water. I love the pics of the bank with the timber. And, that Cracker Barrel breakfast sounds really good too.

I have heard there are almost no smallmouth in georgia. It is right there on the southernmost edge of their range.

You're right WTL. However, as I mentioned before, the Shoal Bass are very close cousins of Smallies. My favorite species to catch without a doubt.

Hello...I am the PawPaw that Fishing Fanatic mentioned here in his post. He and I are good friends and do a lot of kayak fishing together here in Georgia. His post was a trip we did to one of my favorite spots in southern Georgia that I have been fishing for about 18 years now. I've been kayak fishing now for about 3 years. A lot of different from fishing impoundments. I'm attaching some pictures of the Flint River I fish a lot which is about 2 miles from my house. Good to join you guys!!

Georgia has some beautiful rivers alright. I've been fishing them now going on 4 years. I owe alot of my success fishing them to my fishing bud and friend PawPaw. Good to see you posting here Tom!

Gonna disagree there. I caught one in a farm pond that I am almost certain was a smallmouth and it weighed a good 4 pounds......But I could be wrong, I'd love to know.

They wont occur naturally in farm ponds, but there is nothing keeping someone from taking a smallie from its natural range and putting it in there.

Still, I have heard many times of people thinking they got smallmouth in south georgia or florida farm ponds, and normally they are just largemouth that have altered their color cause of their surroundings. There was even a short blurb about it in a Bassmaster 5 or 6 years back.

Just curious, was the water black?

I recall reading an article about a Smallie/Largie that interbred. Some guy caught it in an old rock quarry. The article even had a picture of the fish. I gotta' take a look for it.

WTL there are three lakes just northeast of me with smallies in them; Lake Blueridge, Lake Burton, and Lake Chatuge (on the border with North Carolina). There are no brutes like the ones in Pickwick or the Tennessee lakes, but there really are smallies in them. I got another news flash, Carters Lake (45 miles north of me) has a thriving population of Walleyes. That's a fish I hope to catch soon since I have heard so much about the taste!

I am a true supporter of catch and release but I have, on occasion, kept a Walleye or two for eatin'. They are really good with very white fillets.

Yeah Bob, thats right - and I think since the TN river runs so close to Georgia there may be a creek or two that has them in that drainage.
