Default Favorite Casting Reel Brand

Since the thread about favorite rod brand, I've been curious as to which reels are the most popular on the site. I figured it'd be easy enough to do a poll since there aren't nearly as many reel brands as there are rods. Remember this is for casting reels.

I own a Pflueger, a few Shimanos, a BPS PQ and several Daiwas. The Daiwas are by far my favorite. They palm perfectly, perform wonderfully and the Magforce braking system is the best magnetic system on the market.

Anyone that's seen any of any posts about reels knows I like Pflueger. When I started out I did try several brands before settling on Pflueger and I've been using them for about 7 years now. Started out with the large frame Presidents and a couple of their old round reels. Liked them from the very beginning. I was very happy when they changed over to the smaller frame reel a couple years ago, and now have a majority of Patriarch and Patriarch XT's with a few Assaro's on my crankbait rods. I've had no issues with Pflueger reels, other than some plating issues on the President SPINNING reel handles. They have performed flawlessly in all kinds of weather, with only "normal" care and maintenance. Minor drawbacks for many (not me) are they have limited ratio options [6.3:1 is their standard with 7.1:1 available in some models] and not all models are available in lefty (for those oddballs out there that like them).

I use the 2010 revo stx's, and several old ambassaduer reels. Having worked on every major brand of reel there is, I have several favorites that I would be happy to have, but I have to give abu the nod for long term ownership. I can buy parts from abu for reels that have been discontinued for over 20 years. I can't do that with any other reel brand.

I have used shimano's and pfluegers. Both are great reels, but I chose shimano because I use them more. Have yet to try a daiwa casting reel.

I voted BPS. I have 2 of their Pro Q's and I absolutly love them! If I had 2 rods with me and one was my Pro Q and the other was the 08 Revo Premier. I would choose the Pro Q in a heartbeat. It is a lot smoother on the retrieve and it doesn't backlash easily. I also like the way the Pro Q's palm too. I do like my Premier though. I don't know if I can justify spending more money on reels when I'm in love with my Pro Q's

You SURELY wanted my opion didn't ya? Even though you knew what the answer was going to be. In all honesty....and i have the old style and a couple of the cheaper new ones (pro max, silver max) i still think without a doubt garcias are the best, smoothest bait casting reels out there. Just my opion.

If I could have a perfect reel, it would have:

My AG Revo Premier's light weight and sweet grips.
My Daiwa Zillion 50th's Magforce Z braking.
My Pflueger Patriarch's palmability, smoothness, and IMHO the best aesthetics.

Unfortunately, they don't all exist in the same reel.

If I had to pick one, it would probably be the Patriarch....except they only come lefty in one model....sucks.

I voted for BPS. I previously used Rick Clunn reels, and they were good reels but they were heavy... I have since changed to Pro Qualifier Tournament Reels... only 7 ounces and duralumin gear and crankshaft... only $79 too!!

Of the major brands the only one I haven't tried is a Pfuegar. I have 2 Diawa Zillions last winter and while they are smooth as silk I just can't get the distance out of them without backlashing every once in a while. I had the same problem with the Revo SX I had but I got rid of that one. The Z's seems better than the Revo now that I have them set up as best as I can. I only have one BPS reel, one of the new Carbonlites. So far it has been very impressive with throwing light baits. The only Quantum I have is an old junker that frustrated me until I found that they left out the plate under the cast control knob so there was never any spool tension. It sort of works now. I'd like to try one of those KVD pro ones but I never see them on sale and $300 is too much to just try something.

After trying those I will probably stick with Shimanos. I have found them very easy to service and they have held up very well. I actually really like the centifugal brakes and can cast a long way with them. My only complaints with them are the cost of the Cores (Curados are priced pretty well in comparison to competitors IMO) and I with they had clicking detents on the spool tension knob like the BPS and Zillion.

Bass Pro Qualifiers for me. I picked up a few 2 weeks ago for $69.99. They usually run $100.00. For my money, they are hard to beat.

I love my Revos and I think they are the best reels out there but I have to tell ya, I really like the BPS reels I have. For the money, the Rick Clunn and Pro Qualifiers are hard to beat.

I voted for BPS- carbonlite. I have quantums 2 energys, 1 catalyst, and a code-daiwas an advantage hsta, teara, 2 excelers. For the money you would be hard pressed to get a better reel than the carbonlite. Like nofear there are things I like about all of them and things I dislike about most of them- But I always seem to grab the carbonlite first-

Pretty close to what I expected, Abu's first.

What really surprised me is that BPS reels took 3rd.

Myself, I'm a Daiwa fan for those of you who didn't know!

I now have 5 rigs all with the old model Pflueger Trion 4xLPNS and one wide spool

It was the reel I learned on and I gor the for 40 bucks each on clearance, I am getting the grease cleaned out of them and I am happy, happy

ABU Round Reels; would be my choice, I have broken both thumbs in the past and it is the wrong profile for my hand, I had a RecorndN 50, 2 5600WS and a rocket 5500 all were great reels

BPS Pro Qualifer: also excellent reels

I've always preferred Shimano. But as of late, I've been impressed with Pflueger and Lew's. There is a lot of good competition and innovation going on in the reel industry, and that is good for us consumers.

Man, Lew's hadn't even started making reels again when I created this poll. I bet they'd have some votes though.
