Oiling and Fixing a Reel
Hi guys,
Now that I'm selling a reel(and rod) to my dad, I need to fix it up. It makes a funny higher pitched noise when I cast for the first second. I think it needs to be oiled. Some oil/grease came in a tiny little bottle when I got my Revo STX. Can I use this? Where should I oil it and how much. I really don't know the parts of the reels, so if you would be so kind as to show me a picture or explain, please do. It's also makes a kind of grindy noise when I reel in. The drag is the main problem. I once took it apart and I don't have the schematics for the reel. I think it's put together correctly though. The drag can get soo loose that the drag star can spin freely. But when I tighten it, it's too tight. I can get it just perfect, but I won't settle for a reel that I have to futz with before it's set correctly. Simple, it's either too loose or too tight. How can I fix this? Thank a lot everyone, Julien |

Joolz-you can use the oil that came with your Revo. I'm guessing it is a baitcaster-never heard a spinning reel make noise on a cast other than the sound of the line going out. Use the oil on the bearings. This might help:

I use hot sauce on all mine. Usually about 2-3 times a year.

I believe the schematics are downloadable in the pdf format from the abu site. I downloaded an old no longer made round reel and it was there so I imagine your reel's schematics should be there too. I did the same thing with the drag and I think the order of the washers does make a difference.

Joolz, had the same problem with my dad's old Ambassadeur he uses for Musky. I oiled a couple things and it still made the high pitch noise. I oped it up again and too the spool out. On the opposite side of the reel as the handle, there is a gear that spinns when the spool does and moves the line eye thingy in t he fornt of the reel. A drop of oil on that gear, and problem solved. Give that a try, and remember: a very little oil goes a long way.
