rob,
jerkbaits tend to work for us when the water temp is 50-60, pre spawn , but they can work all summer long too...I like to fish them along riprap, or under bridge cause ways, or really any where there is a depth of 5-7 feet that is hold fish..however fish at any depth will hit a jerk bait if provoked. |

kicker
get an x-rap. imo jerk baits don't have to dive very deep to work..it is a timing thing lenth of pause, lenth of jerk, light twitches to fire breathing slashin yanks.get the right count and rythum and you can wear them out.. not really as hard as it sounds.i only use them winter and pre spawn.. zooker

Does that include soft jerkbaits? Cause I can use those almost any time and catch fish on them year round.

I know I'm in the minority here on this one, but I believe jerkbaits work year around. zooker hit the nail on the head, cadence is the key. Flukes I use the same way almost, and I catch fish year around on them also. In hotter months I work them faster than the colder months.

I too agree with Zooker....I fish rip baits most of the year. I fish them in all 4 seasons. In dead of winter(temps48-55) in clear water can be deadly if you are willing to wait 30-45 seconds during each pause...Spring(55-65)I puase betewwn 5-15 seconds in Spring I use te twitch twitch pause...twitch pause...twitch twitch pause. Summer (65 and higher) Alot of times I will sweep it long ways and let it sit. Otherwise its a fast twitch and pause for 2-3 seconds. Ripbaits are alot of fun. The key it to let the fish tell you how they want it. If you are fishing to fast and missing fish slow down. If your fishing slow and not getting anything speed up. I primarily use Xraps and Lucky Crafts. Yeah LC's are expensive but time and time again they work when nothing else will. Just starting out with rip baits I would reccomend you get some Husky Jerks and some Xraps.Have a great time learning this bait. Its very effective and can produce big fish(has for me)

Since the husky jerk performs a tad dif. than the rogue, you may want to target bass that will come up to 2-3 ft. depth to feed. Usually a husky jerk will go about 2-3 ft deep, and a common retrieve often involves casting, and instead of starting with jerks, do two or three long pulls with the rod to move the bait, pause for a couple of seconds and dead stick it, then begin your cadence of jerk, jerk, pause, jerk....often times stopping the bait can provoke a strike...its agonizingly slow , but works.

I used an X-Rap for the first time Saturday and caught a few. It was cold and windy and the water temps were 54-57. This is my favorite time to use a jerkbait and almost always use a suspending one. They are great in clear water. I'll use a deep diving Husky Jerk if the fish are suspended in 10-12' of water. It's killer! The fish I caught Sat. were on a flat with stumps in 4-6' of water. I caught a couple in the back of a cove as well. This time of year a usually sweep it and stop it for about 5 sec. and keep doing the same all the way in. I'll change it up if they quit hitting it.
I also like a Rogue and a Strike King jerkbait. Eric |

This weekend jerkbaits saved us...I was fishin a tourney on beaver it was cold and overcast all day (cold front moved through the night before) and jerkbaits were to the only thing we could get bit on. Came in 7th (no $ but got a few all important points). Used xrap (silver) and my partner threw a lucky craft (ghost minnow i think) definately a great bait when nothing else is workin

Jerkbaits are great when the bass fry are schooling, if you cast one outside a school of fingerlings, you often score.
