Do a search on the subject. There is a wealth of knowledge here for sure.

when the bite gets really tough remember "don't wiggle the bait", just hold it still. some will call this dead sticking as well but it really makes the fish mad when something like that is just sitting there staring them in the face, it's like it's challenging them.

Sometimes you have to be a bit more specific when using the search function.

Anyway, when I recommeded that you do a search, I was hoping that it would lead you to some very good threads on it. I know I made a post on drop shotting a while ago and it took narrowing it down to search for the phrase "drop shot" and constrain it with thread started by islandbass.

I couldn't find it faster without it.

This is one link to many other great threads on the subject. Here are other search results:

C-rig is correct about not moving the bait a lot. I'll let mine set for a while then wiggle it once or twice, then let it set again.

Also another important thing is how far form the bottom the lure is. If you're casting the DS to a shor or such, ther should be a longer amouth of line between the hook and the weight to accomodate for the angle of the line coming back to the boat. If you're fishing it vertically, there is less line needed between the hook and weight.

How were you working it? Also, what is the possiblility that there weren't fish in the spot you were fishing? You know the saying, 90% of the fish are only in 10% of the water.

On the other side of the coin, the drop shot is not a panacea so as with other techniques, it won't be what the fish want all the time.

Instead of shaking it, try working the slack in the line. From my own personal experience, I can say that while wiggling and shaking the bait does work, it has accounted for the least number of hookups compared to what I call "working the slack line."

Pitcure this:

Your rig is tossed out toward the dock or whatever cover. If the bait isn't a floating type, it will begin to drag your line toward the bottom. Now, before, it hits the bottom, just twitch the line once. This will raise the bait back up a bit. Also while you're doing this, twitch, make sure that it is small enough that the weight does not move. This ensures that the lure while moving is still in what I call its zone or "to be killed" box.

Now if there are fish there, it ought to drive them nuts to draw a reaction or territorial strike.

As with other techniques, they aren't always going to work all the time. The fish:

1) Might have been in too negative a state to strike
2) Might have wanted something else to catch their attention or
3) Might not have been there to begin with.

While the topic is up, what is the difference between drop shotting and a trolling rig (I think that's the name)? How is one fished versus the either? Are they both casted from a boat or is the drop shot just released from the side of a boat?

Trolling - a fishing method by which the lure of choice (live bait, a crankbait, etc.) is set a certain distance behind or to the side of the boat while the boat is moving at usually a small speed. The depth of the lure depends on the amount of weight that is used and the distance the lure is from the boat.

Drop Shot - a fishing method in which the weight is placed at the end of the line with the hook some distance above it. The lure of choice is then placed on the hook. You can think of it as a reverse carolina rig. It can be fished vertically as in straight down from the side of the boat or horizonatally (with the weight in contact with the bottom) as you would a carolina or texas rigged lure.

Ok, perhaps what I meant wasn't a trolling rig.... It is in essence a 1'-2' leader with a hook and sometimes a spinner at the end... It's very much like the drop shot, only the hook is at the end of the leader and not tied onto the line directly as it is in drop shotting.

Where the heck are you fishin'?

Everyone of my DS fish have came on 4-8" leaders. Never even had a bite above 12".

Depending on how you are fishing the DS, your leader can be longer. If you're fishing vertically, leave about 6-12" between the hook and the weight. If you're casting the DS to a back or such from a boat, leave more, around 16-18" This will make up for the angle of the bottom and the line going back to the boat, and keep the lure at about the distance form the bottom

The distances i gave are just general, adjust for what the fish want, but you normally use less when DSing vertically. And that's what's nice about the DS weights, you can move then without retying.

I've never used them, but I can tell you that there is no reason to use those hooks. After you've tied the knot, take the tag end and put it through the POINT SIDE of the eye. That will make the hook point stand straight up.
