Default Carnival Cruise Ship

I've been trying to figure this one out: The ship left Galveston, Tx. All the passenger's transportation-cars, flights, etc. was there, it is where they were supposed to dock, so why did they tow it to Mobile, Alabama which is almost 500 miles east of where they were supposed to dock, not to mention the additional time involved towing the ship? Repairs? Seems to me they would disembark the passengers at the closest port THEN tow it somewhere for repairs.

Your thoughts?

i thought that was kind of stupid myself. the repairs are gonna be made in mobile. BUT to LEAVE everyone on while towing to mobile was STUPID. you know they gonna get sued BIG TIME. there is more to this story than we know...but we will see.

maybe there isn't a big enough port for the ship? doubt if that is true either.new orleans ahs a huge port, gulf port does too. and several other places in mississippi does too.

John, getting several thousand people off of a big ship is not an easy task. You can't just park another boat next to it. A thousand helicopter flights? Yeah, it's a logistical nightmare. If anyone had gotten killed or even critically injured trying to evacuate them, the company would probably be bankrupt from that lawsuit.

Frankly, I think going on a cruise is just a good fishing trip ruined...

Back in the 80's me and my ex-wife decided to go on a 7 day 6 night eating binge...........2 or 3 days in we looked up and a cruise had broken out! Nah it was ok I guess, interesting diversion, but I don't think I'm interested in doing it again.

I've done three cruises - Bermuda, Carribean and Alaska. I've enjoyed them all and would do it again. Never sailed on Carnival, probably would not, but the ships I have been on have been very nice. The food, entertainment, being at sea and visiting the ports is a nice way to spend a week or so. The "staterooms" are not much, but I don't spend any time in one other than when asleep, so it really doesn't matter. I feel sorry for those aboard the one in the Gulf, that must have been horrific.

lisa went on a cruise, i will og on one with her in the near future. THE FOOD is what i want, hahahaha!!

i understand how hard it is to unload a cruise shiop, all i was saying was that ther are LOTS of places where they COULD have made port. but it doesn't matter really to me, i wasn't on that boat.

it seems like it's time to get a bunch of NEW boats for these things. i mean after all the "incidents" lately and all. everything wears out made by man. only so much band-aiding can be done before it needs rebuilt or replaced.

Haha love it!
Probably why booze is so plentiful. The fishermen need to drown their sorrows

Randy Quaid said it best. "Where can I buy some damn bait??"

Watterboy, thanks for the link. I still had my doubts until I looked at a map of the Gulf of Mexico. Now it makes sense. According to the article the ship was approx. 150 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula, which put it almost due south of Mobile. It would have taken longer to tow it to Galveston. I was thinking the ship was a lot further west than it was. Guess they did know what they were doing after all

As far as cruising goes, I have never done and have no desire to do a Caribbean cruise-been down there scuba diving on a couple of occasions and if I am in blue water I want to be in it blowing bubbles, not on it on a big ship.

I have, however, done a cruise to Alaska and down the St. Lawrence from Boston to Montreal. It was fun, but Alaska was awesome. We went from Seattle to Juneau and back. Absolutely beautiful country and well worth the journey. Alaska I would highly recommend and we hope to return one of these days.

Well, I can't take all the credit for that.

I was tipping the hat to Mark Twain, who once referred to golf as "a good walk spoiled".

Still, it's how I wholeheartedly feel. I always chuckle to myself when I see TV commercials marketing romantic Alaskan cruises. What's romantic about me jigging for halibut off of the stern?

Supposedly, Mobile helped in the building of a huge terminal for Carnival cruises, which then promptly left mobile for Texas...Not sure the specifics, but I think it burned some people down here.
