This heat is killing me...
...and my desire to go fishing. Well, maybe not my desire. I want to go really bad right now, however the thought of being covered in sweat, and feeling like I might pass out from standing up is holding me back. I can't wait for the temps to fall back in the 70's again. This really sucks.

Im with ya John , its hot up here too. They say this is the hottest year ever on record so far. I believe it. I backed out of my second tourney this year because of this heat. Theres no reason for me to drive 2 hours one way for some club points , and be very uncomfortable. I like to enjoy fishing.

Good point. To be honest I don't often take anything to drink, and I am out there 5 or more hours at a time. If I had a boat I'd likely be out much longer.

I was like you John. Out on the boat for 8-10 hrs with no water. Now the night before I go I fill up a container with water and freeze it. Maybe 2. Cold water all day now. Even if I am going for a few hrs. I take water.

If I were on a boat I'd have a stocked cooler. But when I go bank fishing, which is the usual for me, I just never think about it 'til I am out there. I guess I need to do something about that. I know it isn't healthy at all.

We stayed on the water till about 2:00pm this afternoon.....It was hotter then blue blazes......something like 99 degrees with a 106 heat index from what I heard......Occasionally we'd pull the boat up next to the bank and sit under a shade tree to cool off for a bit.....Not that it helped much....lol

Like Walker said, drink plenty of water! It's the single most important thing you can do to keep yourself alive in this heat, yes, I said alive. You're a big man John, take care of yourself!

I'm right there with you, big man. When it gets like this I feel like I need to have a radiator surgically implanted in my forehead.
I'm tempted to hit the local pit tonight though....I hear the call of the Musky.

Its been so hot I've had to bring the dog in cause she might give herself a heart attack chasing bugs in the back yard...comes in the house and shes panting so hard it sounds like a locomotive.
I am doing ok with the heat, just go early, come back early, or go late, come back late...if you have to work outside, take frequent breaks. Drink lots of water. Beer is a bad idea. And the more you stay outside, the more you get kinda acclimated to it (you dont get used to it, but it becomes a little easier to handle). I also think exercising often can help you deal with the heat a little better. |

I must be crazy but I'm really liking it. Must have been that LONG winter in upstate New York. I do keep plenty of water and pop in the boat. I know pop isn't so good but I'm sure it's better than nothing. Actually my fishing has been a bit limited this summer due to work which is hard to turn down. I have been out on some very hot days though and this down south heat is much heavier than I ever saw up north. I'll take it over the -25* and drilling holes to fish any day though.

I'm with ya man, I want to go fish but not sure it's worth driving 3 hours round trip to fish for 3-4 hours. The camel pac is a great idea for bank fisherman. I can tell you from experience that once you feel overheated it's too late and you are. Take care of yourself, life is too short.

Man, you ought to give it a shot in 103* with a heat index of 120*, and 100% humidity. Add to that yellow files, snakes, and gators and you have a recipe for pure fun.

I tried it a week ago with a buddy in his boat on a small reservoir. Air temps had been 95 or higher for most of the previous week.
Water temp reading on his fish finder was 86 degrees. No wonder they were not biting. It was hot enuff to make a fish sweat! .

I hate the heat too, but I still have to fish. So, here has been my way too cure that problem.
1) I always where Under Armor loose heat gear as a base, with a white or yellow longsleeved (yes longsleeved) vented fishing shirt. 2) Ice - plenty of it. 3) (1) 32 oz. bottle of water for every hour I'll be out there. 4) (1) 32 oz. bottle of Gatorade that I sip throughout the day 5) 1 bandana - this is where the ice comes in (well and too keep the drinks cool) - Lay the bandana flat and put some ice in, wrap it up and put it on your neckline. Works wonders! I never have a problem with overheating doing this. And while it's not ideal and it usually makes me less ambitious to go, it can be done. I would think that being on bank instead of in a boat would make this easier. Carry the cooler and your gear together - problem solved. As a side note - you said you rarely take water fishing. You can answer the question as to why hot weather is not fun for you just by that statement alone. It would be miserable! |
