a dumb question
When putting new line on a spool, is there a specific way it should be tied onto the spool? I have looked everywhere I can think of to find this out with no luck, so I defer to the experts to answer this simple (and maybe even stupid) question.

Would the answer be an arbor knot? I just saw the knot tying site.....must have missed it before.

WSA, I just use a simple overhand knot tied around the line and pulled tight. No bass will spool you, so that knot really isn't that important. The important one is the one that ties your bait to your line.

Thanks Rebbasser. I hear you. I have spent a lot of time practicing different knots. I am not too bad now but boy did I feel like a loser when I cast out a spinnerbait and watched it go 100 yards or so when the knot came loose. On the plus side, it was my furthest cast ever...lol

LOL! Been there and done that-MANY times ! Hard cast and SNAP! You do get great distance, though .
You really don't need to learn a bunch of knots-I use 2: A palomar and a Trilene knot. I think the knot thread shows both. I use the palomar 99% of the time but use the Trilene knot for long thin baits with a lot of treble hooks that have a tendency to catch line anywhere around them.

There's hope for me yet! Those are the two that I have gravitated toward as well. At least now I have some confidence when I cast that I will get the lure back in my tackle box at the end of the day.

Just be sure to wet the line as you pull it tight-I usually stick the line in my mouth and get some saliva on it. The reason is as you pull the knot tight it creates friction which causes heat which will weaken the knot. The wetness absorbs the heat and keeps the knot strong.

There is nothing like having the line snap in the middle of a cast and watching a rat-l-trap fly in to the next county.
You feel like you are a pitcher watching the ball Mark McGuire just hit as it climbs over the green monster at fenway or something.

A regular old slip knot. Easy to put on and easy to take off.

With regard to your Q, I like to use the arbor knot. Some people don't even bother with a knot and just attach it the with a small piece of tape. I just prefer the arbor. Do you fish for steelhead or salmon? -ib

Hi islandbass,
I don't fish for anything other than bass YET. I anticipate that I will expand my horizons and start fishing for other types as well. Where in WA are you? Have you ever fished up here in British Columbia? |

Here in the salt we don't tie it on just in case we do get spooled we don't tear up any of the other equipment such as reel, rod, or user.

How do you not tie it on? I would never tape the line on, as tape would leave residue on youir spool, and you would have to use a chemical cleaner to get it off, and this could weaken your line. I use an overhand, then go to the other sid of the spool, and tie another one, about 4 times.
