Default slot limits

i fish a pond that has lots of bass in the 10'' range.biggest i caught was a 2 pounder with numerous 1 pounders. i am tired of catching fish that small and was wondering what i should do? i was thinking a slot limit for bass under 10'' and over13''. will the bass in that range be old enough to spawn?the pond doesnt have very much cover ,either.

Agree with Lovinfishin. You want to weed out the 10 and 11" bass which are roughly a pound, and putting slot limit on 12 to 18 would do just that. This would give your 12-18" more room and more food to compete with. With a slot limit you would see a change in fish in just a few years!

Default Fla one pounder

Just read 10 to 11 inchers are roughly a pound. Here in sunny Florida, our 10-11 inchers are about 6 to 8 ounces. A 14 incher is about a pound, a bit longer for males. I'm guessing our Florida bass grow big but mature later than northern fish. Anyone done a serious comparison on this???

Onlyculprits: your right, a 14" is about apound. Usually bass in the south will grow faster and larger but have a shorter life span, but they mature about in about a year. Up here in the north bass grow slower, live longer and mature about one year of age too. But it could be different with the florida stain of bass.

Very interesting comment. Being I have fished in several regionsof the states I can see a difference in the weight versus lenghth. In Pa. a 14" bass could weigh on the average of a 16-24oz. In Missouri they would weigh closer to 14-16 oz. Down here in arkieslaw dpends on where you are fishing. There is a lake that I frequnt that is stocked with florida strains and they are like footballs. A 14" fish will weigh on the average of 2lbs while a 20"fish is pushing 9lbs or better. On the river a 14 will weigh approx.13-16oz and the rest of the lakes on the average of14-16oz for a 14"fish. Very good topic you got going here.
