Gamakatsu DS Hooks
Hey guys, I have been having a problem with the Gammy Dropshot hooks. They are breaking right in the bend of the hook. I have had 8 or 10 do it so far this year, and it is getting worse. I am using 8lb. mono to dropshot with, and I would expect the line to break before the hook. I have used them for several years and never had an issue with them, but alot of the ones I bought this year are breaking. They are breaking when I am hung up, and give a slight pull. Anyone else having an issue with these hooks?
Ryan

Wow, that sucks Ryan. I have not run across that before. You could just have a bad batch (it does happen every now and then). I would send a couple of them back to them and see if they'll send you a new pack. One would think that the line would break way before the hook. I would guess you got some bad steel.

I use them too and haven't had that problem and I'm using 7# line. I use size 2, what size are those? I got 50 of them over the winter, hope they are O.K.
If you are looking at changing hook the Lazer Sharp Round Bend, or Wide Gap (something like that) hooks have been pretty good for me too. They look about like the Gammy SS/DS but have a twist to them. I'll check the name when I get home if you want. |

They are a size 1. I use the size 1 for dropshotting worms, and I use a 1/0 for dropshotting gobies and tubes. I would love to keep using them, but if I have any more problems with them, I will be going to Owner Mosquito hooks. I was thinking about using the Lazer Trokar DS hook, but I cant bring myself to pay that much for one hook.
Bender, do you happen to know the name of the Eagle Claw? Ryan

Ryan, you must've gotten a bad batch or something, I've been using them for about a year now with absolutely no problems. I'd save the broken ones and send them to Gamakatsu. I wouldn't be surprised if they sent you some new packs or something.
Personally, I haven't found a better hook for DS than the Gammy DS/SS hook, but the Lazer Trokar looks similar. I would have a hard time paying the price for them as well, especially since a lot of people have had issues like the hooks straightening or the pointed bending (I wouldn't think these problems would effect the DS hooks though cause they're not fished hard like a punching hook or worm hook).
