Rigging a bike

If any of the guys around my age on here use a bike to get to your pond or lake, how do you put your rods on? I usually just sit the reel under the bike seat, and the rod through the handlebars. Its the only way i could think of that works, but it gets in the way of steering and was wondering if there was a better way. Something like 2 PVC pipes along the back tire bars, held in place by something? Not sure, but there has to be a better way.

Well, I'm much older than you, but I just carry mine, with a backpack tackle bag. I've ridden over 20 miles like that.

wondering the same thing. dont have any ponds by me but a river that holds every kind of fish lol. i just put my rod across my handle bars and hold it. but dont like that. you might have something with the PVC pipe. hope someone helps us lol. i could think of something but would like to know of a working idea.

should not even need this i turn 16 in a month. but i have not even worried about getting my temps. been fishing to much.

i have put the rod in my backpack and its stayed like that but it has had its probelms.

Im thinking of getting 2 pvc pipes, one on each bar near the rear tire, but i dont know how to attach them there...maybe something like a strap that you choose the size, like the ones at a store when you buy something.

i just carry the rods in my hand, and i have a backpack on also. i take up to 6 rods normally.

I've done the same thing that you have described Texas. I used Zip ties to attatch the PVC to the bike. Two holes on the top and bottom part of the PVC to put the Zip ties through! Also I've used a dremel tool to create a little indent along the side of the PVC for the reel to fall into so it doesn't fall out.

Texas, zip ties work great, you can trim the excess and using pvc will be ok, but find a way that you can size the tubes with the rod so you could maybe seal them off incase you have to go through rough territory. Also when you crank down the zip ties to the pvc you may want to use a small pc of heavy duty foam or rubber to give the pvc tube something to meld into creating a barrier between the frame of your bike and the pvc tube . It will end up moving around and getting loose on you if you don't. Take it from a fellow off road thrasher. I've included a pic of me from a race in Bloomington Indiana that I did. It was a NORBA national. I was in the expert category at that time.

Nope, haven't been to lake monroe. Why, is it just as muddy. That was a He____ish day. Hot, muggy, rained for days before the race. Never got time to do anything but get ready for the race. I've never really fished outside of Michigan except as a kid on a charter in florida and some fly fishing in colorado.

When i couldnt drive i just simply put my tackle box on my back n hold the rod in my hand and steerd with the other i guess it depends on skill and agilty ..but either way always bring water !!

BPS sells an attachment for bikes that attach to the back pegs like training wheels. I wish I could give you the link, but I'm on some weird computer.

The zip ties didnt work so well, they didnt seem to keep it tight enough and the pipe kept falling...

patrick i looked on BPS and couldnt find it, someone got a link?

Is your rod collapsable? You may want to think about going with a collapsable rod, that way you dont need as much space to work with. That will also open up the possiblity of new ideas. Just a thought.

You sure they were zip ties (cable ties, panduits, etc) and not twist ties (on bread containers, trash bags)? I just usually rigged my rod up, stuck a few lures, packs of worms, spare hooks, whatever, in a pocket, and went......But doin it right is probably better

yea, they were zip ties. A friend of mine just told me he does exactly what im saying, except he uses hose clamps. Gonna try that as soon as possible.

I have had some ideas. I made a pvc pipe holder that attached to a bar on the front wheel with velcro, but could be removed. Trees became an issue. Don't try anything that makes them go straight up and down.
Now, I have a mountain bike. I hold my rods against the bar that goes out.

i use bunnjee cords, and i set it up like you have it now, but the end of the rod is under the handle bars, so they dont interfere with steering, and the handles are also secured with bunjee, cant fall off liek that, just make sure you dont hook urself in the leg on the way there, put your hooks towards the tip of the pole during trips.
