Default First trip to lake Ouachita.

Well, today was the first time i've been on lake Ouachita in the 9yrs since moving to Arkansas, and I loved it....Beautiful lake as I expected. A cool front moved thru the night before so it was pretty nippy runnin across the water this morning. I wasn't sure how that might effect the bass, so I started trying a variety of baits, but by early afternoon, i'd thrown a multitude of different lures with no success, while my buddy Ron had caught 2-3 half pound bass while fishing for bream using live crickets.....lol. He tried sellin me some of the crickets, but his "on the water" asking price was too much.

Actually my "no success" statement wasn't exactly true.....At one point I was using a Gulp finesse worm on a shakey head jig when it got nailed by what seemed like a good bass at first, but I quickly realized something didn't feel right and moments later I boated a nice 3# Channel cat.....lol. Who knew they liked shakey heads?....hahaha. I'd caught a cat on a spinnerbait and a crankbait, but this was my first on a plastic worm.

Sometime in the afternoon, I switched to one of Kory's jigs with a Ragecraw trailer and "BOOM" a few casts later i'd caught my first bass.....A nice 2.5# Kentucky.....several casts later I caught another one about the same size.....In all I caught 5 in a row with the largest about 3#.....My last hookup was a nice one, but she threw the lure at me when she jumped....I looked at Ron and I could tell by the look on his face she was nice sized....He said "Wow....did you see her.....I'll bet she was 5-6 pounds at least"........Arrrrrrrrrrg!!!!! Second trip in a row i've lost a nice fish, but at least I had a witness.....lol.

All in all we had a great day and I look forward to returning to Ouachita again real soon.

We put in at the Denby point marina on the SW end of the lake....we only traveled up river a mile or so and fished the points and coves mostly.....all the bass I caught were taken on the sunny side of the river that afternoon.....and all were near the bank in 1'-8' of water with the river channel just a few feet away. Everytime I caught a bass and looked at the locator we were sittin in 12ft of water throwin at the bank. Water temps were in the upper 60s with water visibility somewhere around 5-6ft in most of the area we were in.
