Thats the best way I know to describe todays outting. It was one of those rare golden days you dream of but don't experience nearly as often as you would like. Got out early before sunup and started throwing a Jitterbug and spinnerbait. Didnt catch a thing. So as the sun started to glow in the distant horizon I switched to a Rattlin Spook. First cast I hooked up with a nice little chunky two pounder. By now I could see the lake well enough to scan the waters. It didnt take long to realize it appeared there were schools of bass slashing into schools of baitfish. Not sure what they were, but they were youngins, about the size of crappie minnows. Whole clouds of these minnows roaming around the lake just about everywhere you could see. I quickly fired up the trolling motor and headed out to deeper water. The bass were working in schools like wolfpacks, hearding the school of baitfish to the surface and then ripping into them. The pattern was set for the day. Wait untill the bass started busting into the baitfish and then through either a spook or a popper into the froth of jumping/slashing bass and work that bait fast through the frenzy. That made the lure look like a panicked baitfish and the bass would smash it! Most of the bass I caught, lost count, I let go. Here are the four I kept for the grill. Yes, I do eat a few bass from time to time.

I only wish I was on vacation the next week so I could get back at them while the gettin is good! I've included a pic of my boat. As you can see there isn't much room, and I only had 7 rods with me today. Usually there is 9, lol. Talk about crowded!

Part 2. Thought I'd share a little info you might find interresting. The school of baitfish were scattered all over the lake which is about 90 acres in size, natural glacier made lake with no inflowing stream. The baitfish were in water anywhere from 10 foot deep to 30 foot deep. The majority of bass were caught on a Rattlin Spook. Not sure of the color other than it looks like a baitfish, perhaps a shiner of some sort. The other bait that worked the best was a 3 inch bone colored popper with the tinsle or mylar rear trebble Not sure of the make as it's old, no markings and I don't remember, lol. Caught one on a StrikeKing KVD 1/2 oz. Redeye Shad lipless crank in chrome sexy shad. That kinda surprised me as I thought a lipless cranks would work better than that for schooling bass. Caught 2 on a Heddon Excaliber Spit'n Image in Threadfin Shad color. And two were caught on a Norman Deep Little N in a bluegill color. I tried using a buzzbait a lot as well as both the Rapala X Raps and Luckycraft Pointer SP100. Nothing on either of them. Also nothing on any swim baits or flukes. What they wanted was a surface bait like a spook or a popper worked fast through the feeding school. I tried a slower retieve and that produced zilch.

I save the fryer for perch and walleye fillets

KD, kind of surprised that the fluke didn't draw any attention - I recently saw the KVD short on basspro where he was using the double zulu rig on schooling bass, and they were pounding it. I mean, hey, it is TV, but still seemed like a novel idea (and something I plan to try soon!)

Dinner is going the be this comming thursday. The fillets are frozen and waitting to be eattin when the rest of the family can be here.

I can tell you that I have yet to have an experience bass fishing in that scenario. That one probably be one example of heaven on earth. Congrats.

Sounds like an Awesome dad Keith! Me and buddy had something like that yesterday. Only we couldn't cast to the busting bass, lol! I knew we should took the john boat!
