Default My first meanmouth and A-rig fish.

My wife and I went to Table Rock with Sunday and Monday and spent some time on the water. I threw that silly rig all over the place because they're supposed to be catching lots of fish and some big ones out there on it right now. Well I must not have been doing it right because I only caught one fish on it the whole time but it was my first meanmouth and my first A-rig fish. I was pretty sure it was a meanmouth because it still had a stripe down the side like a spot but it was brown like a smallie but a local fishing closeby confirmed it for me. Sorry about the dark picture, I lightened it up the best I could with my limited computer skills.

Didn't get to fish much Sunday, 20mph+ winds and 16' aluminum don't mix well on a big lake.

Nice fish blue.
A couple of firsts always makes for a great afternoon!
Can't wait to see a two on, on your second and a 3 on, on your third outing.

One of the local guides down there calls the A-rig "The Mess" I like that name cause it is a mess to throw that thing!

I threw one at a very clear florida spring lake and caught nothing. Perhaps clearer water isnt as good for the rig. I did ok throwing little chatterbaits and xraps, just nothing on the alabama rig.

Its a schooler bait ment to used when they are chasing fish,if you dont visually see them chasing not a top bait to use.Its not a search bait, but one uses it when you find them grouped.
Use it like you would a 200 bandit and you will get disappointing results.

Thats a beautiful smallie. Congrats. I bet the next thing in A Rigs is a colapsable version that can be stored much like an unbrella.

Yeah lilmule, I think at least you need concentrations of fish to compete for the school that the rig represents. As long as I dont get rained out, I intend to try it this week on the shoal bars where I caught all those spots, including some doubles, last autumn.

Table Rock is a very clear lake so I know it will work in clear water. Some of the guys catching fish on them are fishing them were there is no baitfish around. I think it just looks like such an easy meal to some fo the fish can't pass on it. Table Rock has a pretty good population of meanmouths (smallmouth-spotted bass hybrids) They are an awesome looking fish with some of the best features that each of the parent fish has to offer.

Yeh well when i said clear i meant like a house you can see through. Table rock is more like a paper bag from the greasy spoon, you know, translucent.

I've seen clear plastic tubes being sold to hold the rig. Depending on what wire is used you may get by with paper towel roll.....might be too small. Maybe use cut out soda or water bottle.

Hey jig fisher that donkey rig looks pretty good. You gonna try one in Pa? I might get one and try it out on some private ponds I fish.

Well I have become a firm believer in the A-rig for monster largemouths in that over the last 4 weekends my partner and I have caught (5) double digits (10.0, 11.2, 12.0, 12.7, and 13.4). My largest fish before this rig was 7 lbs. All measured, weighed, pictured, and released alive and kicking.

A large plastic coffee container works well for storing the rig.
