Trying to make some rod sleeves...
using expandable braided sleeving(ie: techflex) but not sure what size to use? Instead of buying store made sleeves at $5 to $8 I think this will work perfectly. Planning to buy about 100 ft, cut to size and close the end with like some hot glue. It comes in sizes from 1/8" to 1" but I think the 1/2" would slide over the eyes on most baitcast rods, any thoughts?

The rod sleeves I have are about an inch wide, closed and flat.

The store bought ones I have around around an inch as well. Stick Jacket brand lists the max diameter of the rod at 1-1/4" and with a circumference of approx. 3-7/8", their diameter is 1-1/4" I don't think 1/2" would make it past most stripper guides.
Measure your largest rod guide around the blank and guide for the circumference. Divide by ~3.14159 to find the diameter. I'd then step up to the next size so they're not overly tight. Definitely let us know how this turns out and posts pics! BB

I appreciate the information! BigBassin, I can't say I've used "pi" in a few years but I'm looking forward to getting an accurate measurement so thanks. It sounds like 1/2" might be too small so I'm thinking about buying a 10ft section of 1" for a few bucks and testing it out. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes with pics.

Update...Trying to make some rod sleeves...
I must say I'm absolutely pleased with how the first one turned out. I opted to purchase a 100 ft roll of 3/4" PET braided sleeving from a car audio supply company online. I paid $28(s&h was included) and once it arrived I cut a 6ft section to fit over a 7ft baitcast rod. I heated up the rod tip end with a very advanced Bic disposable lighter and added a few office staples to hold it in place. The sleeve slid over the guides effortlessly and I folded the reel end, outside in. The only issue is when removing the sleeve the reel end tends to get caught up a little bit, so I need to work that out somehow.
They also make this sleeving in "clean cut" which supposedly doesn't fray when cut with scissors. That would probably solve the above but oh well. I should be able to get around 16 sleeves total out of the roll so at $1.75 apiece ya can't beat that. Considering a few weeks ago I nearly lost my mind trying to get a rod out that was tangled deep inside the rod locker. So as long as they hold up I'll be calling it a success! |

Very cool, glad it worked out for you. I might have to see if my local car audio place will sell me a piece. They'll usually sell stuff like that, which a lot of other places won't. I've gotta pick up a wiring harness for my new-to-me stereo anyways, so I'll be in there.
