Trolling motor

I got a motor yesterday for my 8' boat. It works good but does anyone know how to make it run a little faster?? We hooked up 2 batteries to it and that helped some but it just needs a little more to really get us moving across the lake. Thanks for ur help

I would say you have two choices: #1 more thurst or #2 less weight in the boat. Now if you are like me, you take a ton of "essential" gear that adds up to a lot of weight. If I had a choice of more thurst or less gear, I would be looking at a bigger motor.

Disconnect that second battery pronto, unless it's a 24V motor, you'll burn the motor up shortly.
Trolling motors are designed to go a certain speed, depending on the size of the motor, there is not much you can do to make it go faster.

Nothing wrong with a 30#, just nothing much you can do to speed it up either

I got a 20 lb thrust on a 9' boat and it has plenty of power. Looks like you could ski behind it when on full power.

I got my brother a 30# for his canoe in NC, he said it cooks across the water, but I have yet to see it. I bet it does move out pretty good if your 20# pushes a jon boat that fast.

ok that makes me think is there a particular depth he should run this thing at? I know most of the trolling motors have adjustable height.

Are you sticking it alll the way down, or are you putting the propeller just under the surface of the water?

You can run 2 batteries as long as they are connected correctly for a 12 volt. A 30 pound thrust motor should move that boat at a decent rate.

Not neccessarily-if you set it up in I believe it is parallel you should be ok-pos to pos and neg to neg. 24V needs series-TM + to one positive terminal, TM - to neg on other battery, and a then the - on the first battery to the + on the other. If it is a 12V motor getting the second battery out of the boat will reduce a lof of weight giving you more speed.

Its down in the water far enough. Its far enough down to clear both of the pontoons and can rotate 360 deg.

It is a 8' bass hunter i believe. The boat isnt mine its a friend that im borrowing it from so i dont know all the details but i know its 8' and its a pontoon type of plastic bass boat

Yes, I assumed he had them in parallel, placing 24V on a 12V motor. Adding another batteries in series won't do anything to speed it up, providing the battery is capable of producing the output the motor is asking for.
Removing weight won't make the boat faster, according to the trolling motor people I've spoken with, they are designed to run at 'x' speed, it'll just take longer to get there. Just like a car, you can load it up with another 1000Lb, and it'll still go 55, just not as fast as an empty car. It made sense when they told me anyway

It does bring up another question that I have. I see several boats with a 100-150 HP or so big motor and then a 5-10 HP motor mounted beside it. Is that for trolling also? Is this electric that attaches to the lower end an alternative to this?

bender they are known as kicker moters most of the off shore boats or bigger great lake boats have them. the answer is yes and no.. yes they are used for trolling or getting your boat back to the dock when the big moter breaks down.. no they are NOT a replacement for the eletric moters mounted on the big moter.. those eletric moters are like a trolling moter that moves the boat very slowly -southern folks call it strolling- they are used mostly for fishing with live bait-think powered drifting-

The guys around here use the smaller motors on the reservoirs,
that have a 9 horse size limit...and then use the big motor on the lakes that will allow them..
denny got busted this summer at hueston wood lake cus he had his 25 horse running, instead of using the trolling motor...they have a 9 horse limit at the woods....
've seen them even hassle guys with rangers(boat)with the 150 on the back and have the prop in the water, even tho
the boater is using the electric trolling motor only, they want to see his big motor out of the water..
The rest of the ol timers like mentioned before, have various sizes for trolling..
