Default How do you interpret Load Capacity?

If a boat has a load capacity of 4 People and 495 lbs; am I to assume that if two people weigh more than 495 lbs then the boat is over weight? We need to include tackle and gear too, right?

Thanks

usually a boat will give two ratings one is with and one is with out gear but ive never seen a boat with that low of a load capacity that would hold 4 people.

I probably got the people wrong but the load weight is correct.

yeah it is basically the max number of people or max weight whichever you reach first, and yes gear counts towards the weight as well.

my dad just bought a 10' pond prowler and with gear and people the rating is 2 persons or 650 pounds and we plan on over loading it since i weigh 240 he weighs 260 and we are putting two 55 pound thrust trolling motors and two batteries but we will only use it on our 15 acre pond.

Are you sure it didn't say 795 or 895? I saw your other post and it seems kind of strange that an 18' boat would have such a low weight limit?

Here is the link to the ad. And yes the capacity does seem low for a 17 ft boat.

that weight limit is not right. i believe that you were miss informed. that boat is definately big enough that you shouldnt have to worry about putting 4 people in it and being over the weight limit.

That's wild, when I looked at the pictures you could see the Coast Guard stickers adjacent to his shifter/throttle lever. If you really want to push this guy, maybe he can take a picture of that sticker and send it to you. It may say that but my gut feeling is that boat is rated for more like 800 pounds fully loaded (4 persons or persons and load). With the exceptions of the bench seat (that looks rather worn down and not much cushioning), that looks like a pretty sweet rig. That 150 faststrike should make that lightweight Hydrosports scoot along pretty danged good. They don't make those evinrude trolling motors any more, but that was a pretty solid t-motor and seemed to last forever.

Just to get the facts on this I just sent an email to Hydra-Sports. They only make salt water rigs now and in 2001 were purchased by a larger company, Genmar?, Something like that. If they still have the specs on this rig that should settle any doubt. Will let you know what I find out. I did the same thing when I had a question about Charger boats. They were happy to help.

Well here it is straight from Hydra Sports;

"The specs for the 1998 175 are as follows.

Length: 17'7"
Beam: 84"
Fuel Cap: 38 Gal
Person Cap: 4/495
Max Wt Cap: 1070
Appx Hull Weight: 1450 lbs
Max HP: 150

It is what it is.

ok, just go by the TOTAL wt. you are fine as far as i can tell. i wouldn't worry bout the 4/495 deal. just go by the 1070 TOTAL weight.

But the total weight is what you subtract from for batteries, trolling motor, main engine and other accessories and then the people and tackle, correct?

naw i don't think so. and even if that is true, i don't think you'll get too close to the total weight.
