Fixin up a Tin?

my/my dad's jon boat leaks.. theres some cracks in the V's and different places but there is one rivet loose. i may put a new rivet in it too, but i need to patch the holes.. whats the best thing to do with it?

its our duck boat and pond boat.. not registered , just a paddle boat.

what do yall suggest?

i've got some waterproof putty should i try that?

how about JB Weld

Fiberglass?

i need ideas.

i have a buddy that just put jb weld on his and its holdin up pretty good. we only been out once but no leaks yet.

were getting like 2-4" in a good fishing outing..

i may get the wire wheel on it tomorrow and try some jb weld on it tomorrow

well i forgot to mention that.. it was welded before..but he didnt weld like 3 sets of rivets..

and theres holes in the V's on the bottom..



oh yeah, its a sears gamefisher.. its a thick boat.. weighs like 100 lbs empty it seems like

ummm id say fiberglass it up!!! never seen jb weld on one but i dont see why not... I dont think i could trust the putty though, waterproof or not...

I dont think fiberglass would work. JB can work depending on where it is, if its a place that gets hit like the front keel welding is the only sure thing. 3m 5200 also can help seal it, especially from the inside.

My front keel is cracked all the way along it. I've done JB, it got knocked off. 5200 lasted longer but I beached it last week and rubbed some of that off, although its still watertight.

Welding is great if you know someone who can do aluminum.

WTL.......if the area is prepped correctly fiberglassing is actually a great way to repair it. I have done several that way and they hold VERY well. JB weld is a good repair but again the prep work has to be done correctly. ANY and I do mean ALL repairs have to be clean. Aluminum is a funny critter. Of course weldong is the best. Second option is glassing. Thourougly clean with a wire brush removing the paint. Clean with acetone then rough it up a little with a tiger disc and acetone it again. I use this procedure whether welding or glassing the repair. The only place I dont recommend glassing is where you will have alot of flex. Flex will in time break the bond of the glass to the bottom.

i have a bunch of friends that are taking welding at a tech college now, and my dad has a few friends.. my grandpa can do it if i pay for the gas.

the marine epoxy stuff i put on beforecame off so i think it may have been rubbed raw. if i can get to these cracks on the inside, i may try to seal them that way. if not i'll have to do it on the bottom.

we'll see how it goes..

How does glassing hold up to areas that are rubbed by the trailer/beaching? Thats the real test that I am thinking about that I havent quite been able to fix.

you trusted less than putty the other day you fished out of the jon boat.. roofing tar works though doesnt it?

didnt trust it to not get me wet, but we both know what happens in the boat anyway, so i was prepared for nothing worse than usual lol,, I HAD THE CROCS ON! but not for outside cracksit seeped thru on the inside anyway

Well bud it actually holds up very well. Again I wanna stress that the prep work is the most important aspect of the job. I had a Duracraft 14' 42" bottom that had some bad spots in it and the trailer ..........well lets say I was kinda embarressed over the trailer. Anyways I repaired the bad spots using glass. On the back of the boat I had a warmed up 40hp Mariner (same as a Merc)....the 2 cylinder 2 stroke. That motor and boat combo never let me down. It never leaked a drop again. With the torque of that motor and actually fishin bigger rough water lakes that would beat the rivets outta a boat she never leaked again.

my big fisherman buddy [that i have out fished by 7 oz ] fiberglasses his boat . but he just slaps a square of fiberglass on and lets it dry

I had a spot with a crack in the floor of my jonboat right where it met the back of the boat. I cleaned it good and applied JB Weld and it has held strong and water tight for three years now. Still hard as a rock. I swear by that stuff. I had an old freezer once that had a door hinge that was rusting out so badly, the door pin would not rest in it correctly anymore causing the door to not shut tightly. So I worked up some JB and jammed it into the hinge, packed it in tightly, and reshaped the inside of the hinge with the door pin and let it set up overnight. I reinstalled that door the next morning and it held great for years untill the compressor went out.
