Default Merc is smoking a bit.......

Any ideas what may cause an older 150 hp Merc to smoke a bit, sometimes more than others , after starting. Even if the motor is warm and has been running on and off all day, still smokes at times after starting. My father-in-law used the phrase "gas is too oil rich" which I have no idea how you would even adjust that???

What color is the smoke?

If it's black, you may be running too rich an air/fuel mixture. You didn't say whether you were carbed or injected, but either way...same result.

If it's bluish gray, you may be oiling too much (2-stroke), or leaking oil into the cylinders (4-stroke...usually worn valve seals or bad piston ring seal).

I've taken it as far as my knowledge allows. If you give more info, some of the guys who know your exact motor may expound on what I've said.

Year of motor would help out bud. Also have you ever done a Seafoam Shock Treatment?????? What oil are you using????? Have you ever drained the tank????? I see you live in Michigan..............you could very well have gotten a big dose of ethanol. Do you have a water seperator on your ride???? Answers these and then we can take the next step bud.

They all smoke at times.. some more than others... it helps keep the mosquito population in check.

Mercs are good at that. If it helps, just think that is is getting plenty of lube.
