Default Good Deal?

Yall may slap me for it, but theres a deal in town, i dont think i can pass up.

somewhere around a 1990 Mustang LX. 5spd car, no motor. like 127K on it.
mis matched wheels. 300 takes the body,
or i can take the motor they plan to put in it, for an extra 100. the motors a 351W.

hmm. good deal?
Bad news is, i leave saturday for two weeks at camp, so i wont be able to make any $$. but i may go back and ask him if i can make a down payment on it.

What do you want it for?

If you're into drag racing or something, it would be a cheap project car.

If you're looking for a cheap daily driver, I would steer away from it, but that's just me. It depends on how handy you are with cars (or if your Dad is, I guess). In my experience, old beat up cars are money pits for anything else but goofin' off.

What you will find after a while is that you acquire too much crap.

Is that the car you will want in 10 years when you are making money?

If not, do you want to throw cash into it now (after the initial 400) for something that you will never get its value out of?

All I know is I have too much stuff. These are not very liquid investments right now, esp with the economy and one of the lesser mustangs.

WTL is soooo right. I have a stupid 450+hp small block Chevy in my garage I have lugged around for years now, and let's just say since I bought my boat, I have zero interest in hot rodding any more. It was my passion for a long time, but I injured my back, and now it just looks like a big hunk of wasted money sitting on that stand. I really oughtta sell it to some foolish teenager.

I agree with WTL. If you're gonna buy a car to fix. spend a bit more and buy a project that you can actually make money off of when the economy turns around.

well, good news is.

my g/fs dad is the one that got me on this mustang thing, and he told me today that the one he was looking at was still forsale. it has a 2.8, and it wont run, but the guy just changed the timing chain so he knows we can fix it

well, he said to pick the best body, the hatchback[one he found] or the notchback [one i found] and we'll build one togeather. I like you, and if you and chelsea break up or something, i dont care, we'll still work on it. cause i'mma give it to you anyway

now, do i take his word, and work with his, or get mine?

his is running and driving basicly, so i might need to bank on him

and yeah, with a V8, mustangs hold their value. even if its not a VIN'ed v8, they are still mean on the track

ok, my opion ONLY ok? IF it were me, i would pester my uncle or who ever the relative is that has the old mopars. THAT is a better investment or you in the future. you will spend more money on it, but the return will FAR outweigh the investment.

Well yeah a 90 mustang will hold its value, it doesnt have much to begin with. Its a relatively fast, cheap car. Thats all it is. One day they might call it a classic, but it will never be a real classic like the older mustangs, camaros, challengers or the like.

You sound like you are itchin to pull the trigger now, but if you wait a little while longer something better will come up. And when that happens, you dont want to be stuck with all your money in an old mustang.

If your g/f Dad wants to put the money in it, thats another thing altogether. Might be a good experience. Might get to have the fun that goes with working on an old car without putting money up. Of course if yall do break up, the car just kinda will go away, lol.

WTL's right again. Even a lot of the older mustangs aren't worth too much, unless you get into something special, like a fastback, mach 1, boss, GT350 or 500, etc.

Bama's right too. if you could find yourself a mopar, that's guaranteed to hold it's value or more likely, go up. The classic cars have made a very small comeback around here recently. Nothing big, but it's a good sign. The cars were one of the last things to go in the recession, and will be one of the first to come back.

My guess would be that a '67-69 351W with 127k miles would be worth more than $100 to a Mustang fan. Might be worth checking the # and learning a little more about it.

Problem with Windsors is they are thin-walled castings. If it's got 127k on it, there's a good chance it isn't worth rebuilding, at least from a performance standpoint. That's why numbers-matching Fords that have actually been driven a lot are so hard to find. Don't get me wrong. I love old Fords...they're probably my favorite. But my opinion is their Windsor and Cleveland small blocks did not stand up to time very well, compared to Chevys and Mopars. It's funny how stupid a board room full of "smart" bean counters can be when they decide to use less of the "expensive" iron when making engine blocks. Planned obsolescence run amok.

i let the stang go.

but, anywho,

the car guy that built the S10, and MX6
has a 98 jetta wolfsberg(sp) edition, 5 spd that he said he'd give me a deal on.
its got a slight tap, and no 2nd gear, but he said he's got a tranny for it,

and i've got a line on a motor already for $360 and i can get it cheeper than that through my uncle

overall project cost, 500 bucks. he drives it like it is, and said i could drive it like it is, or try and fix it, eitherway, its a good mileage car. even if it is FWD

but at 17, and as much as i drive, i need some more gas mileage. and in the event i need some speed, it is a bit quicker then the dippy. He said he will keep it until i get the $$

he traded the hood and front clip to his golf gti

Deal, or No deal?

Photog,

The Chevy 305 is a total hunk of junk. Be glad you got the V6, because at least it is a less expensive hunk of junk.

I am actually considering selling it. I have no more dreams of drag racing. My poor carcass couldn't handle another wreck.

Ahh, a little careful work with a screw driver and hammer in the ignition and all you would have needed was a new ignition. The cops might have a few extra questions if they stop you. But what is youth without adventure? hehehehe....

Haha...I used to have this argument with the idiots I worked with at Papa John's all the time. They would swear up and down that V-6's and straight 6's were just better motors than V-8's, for whatever ridiculous reason they believed that week. Given the same materials, rod/stroke ratio, and cam timing, and displacement, a V-8 will flat out own a 6-cylinder engine due to better power-to-weight ratio (straight 6), and improved balance (V-6).

I had a old charger with a 318, 727 torqueflight tranny. And i had a 68 vette at the same time. On a cold freezing jan morning, the vette wouldn't start, but the charger..........whinn for a few mins, then VROOM. Everytime. Miss that old charger.......yea the vette too.
You can tweaka 318 and make it SCREAM man. Go to your uncles yard, get a 727 tranny, bore the motor 30 over, shave the heads a little. posi rear. Make it scream man.
