Definitely not how I choose to return my fish to the water. That's a classic example of what some clowns with a video camera and a forum to show off will do to get their 15 seconds of glory.

as long as the fish goes in the water it really do't matter how it gets there..

i do tend to do the single rotation back flip at times. though i don't try any fancy upward toss..

I bassically single out the quickest, least hassling way to get the fish back in the water... which is usually a light belly flop toss when bass fishin. if i have them outta the water for any extended period of time for any number of reasons such as problems unhooking them i'll eaze them back in the water, grab the tail and move them around untill they swim off. like zooker said it really doesnt matter how the fish gets back in the water, yet i would imagine it would slightly disorientate the fish if you did the whole double back flip toss liek the individual in the video does...

dout it.. shaw gribsby once said " the trick is to get the fish up and disorinated from it's surroundings as fast as possible."

FACT:
if a fish can figure out where it is the fish will head for the thickest cover it can find..

and how many times will that cover cause them to get away??

i give them a toss awayfrom the structre im fishing. if a blue gill or a rock bass hits my crankbait i lift my rod tip in the air quickly and snap it down fast.

The head first to rush water over the gills method I use for all fish releases. It is a saltwater thing I guess.

But when I started fishing for bass. Some 30 years ago I would hold the fish and move it back and forth in the water till it swam away on its own. Lost a few fish to that method. The fish just never woke up from the shock of being caught so a gentle head first toss was next and hardly ever had a fish die.

Bass are sunfish. You can skip a bluegill across a pond without killing it. I think that bass are tougher than some of you may believe. They are not those wimpy salmonids.

I mean I slighty toss the fish back in, but I do not revive every fish, I will take the time and run a big fish back and forth in the water, but the smaller ones I gently throw back and I have never had one die, but the a**hole needs someone to grab him by the mouth and try to throw him as far as they can. There is just no need for that. Immaturity.

Yeah, the video was removed for reasons not known.

For those that did not see the video, the two anglers shamefully took the dink bass that they caught and lipped them as anyone else would and flicked them straight up into the air sometimes as high as 15' (best guess) while the bass somersaulted and tumbled numerous times before they landed in the water and even they, they didn't always land head first. The smiles and smirks on the faces made it even more sickening. They appeared to also be in their early to mid 20s too.

Maybe it doesn't hurt the bass, but that is not the point. Yes, we know bass are tough and resilient, but once again that is not the point. The point is to treat the fish caught with care at the very least. Just because a bass or any other fish "can take it" does not and should not give us free license to toss them back into the water however we feel.

I imagine and would hope that the two anglers are not bad guys, but they surely conducted themselves in a manner unbecoming of a responsible angler.

A bass is not as tough as you may think. Delayed mortality is a main concern. Stress,oxygen required,dry surfaces, and just poor handling can effect a bass' behavior. Alot of tournaments have a high delayed mortality rate. Up to and over 30% of the fish die after the fish is released. Maybe up to a week later.

I rarely even lift my fish out of the water unless its big. I de-hook it at the side of the boat while its still in the water. Then I push its head about 6" under the water to prevent it from splashing when it swims away.
