Red belly on Largemoouth
Why would a largemouth have a red belly in November? I fished a tournament on Jordan lake in Alabama Saturday and several of the largemouths had red belly's. Not sure of the reason. Any comments would be appreciated.

Interesting. What color is the bottom of the area they were caught in?
Maybe the Ol' Mossback's wanted a little Xmas color to celebrate the holiday's? |

They might have been sitting where there is a red clay bottom.

It was almost like a spawning bass thats been fanning the bottom. Skin was like "bloodshot" . There was several with this discoloration.
The bottom is in some places muddy, but their appearance didn't look stained. Was like it was internal. Was interesting to me, have not noticed largemouth that looked like this, this time of year in Alabama. Wish I had some pics. The guy that did the weighing in called them "red snappers", because of the red appearance. |

I thought that it was because they were running shad or crawfish in shallow water that may have caused this. The water temp is about 61 deg. Was not expecting them to be shallow.

Other than that it could be acute lateral sporginosis or perhaps you're seeing hemorrhage(ing) caused by the phenominal weight gain many believe happens this time of year.
