This is my first year using an outboard motor, and I have learned to keep the outboard down when trolling. Otherwise it can be really hard to start.

With what is less important than how.

Look at your tacklebox, what youīve got ? I bet that aside from those odd, expensive and sometimes really hard to find exotic Japanese baits baits Iīve got you tacklebox has pretty much what mine has, everybody catches fish with soft plastics, everybody catches fish with spinnerbaits, I ainīt gonna say everybody catches fish with buzzbaits cuz I donīt, but itīs safe to say that a great number of anglers with some exceptions ( like .... me ) catch fish with buzzbaits, everybody catches fish with cranks and so on, so if everybody got pretty much the same stuff then why is it that some are better than others atc catching feesh with the same tools everybody has ----> there are no magic lures, itīs a matter of using the right tool for the job.

Things I have learned in what I call my first real year fishing (even though I purchased my first spinning rod about 10 years ago).

- March, April, and May are great months to fish (I missed them this year ).
- Be patient but also to know when to switch baits.
- When your buddy catches that hog that you just missed, you CAN and SHOULD be happy for him.
- Don't fish private ponds without permission.
- I now know several people with private ponds.
- Camping/fishing trips are a whole lot of fun.
- I prefer plastics over "hard" baits.
- I don't have enough money to buy the fishing equipment that I really want.
- Take care of the fishing equipment that I do have.
- Fishing in my 1man pontoon boat is a blast and much more fun than fishing on the bank.
- I need a trolling motor for my 1man pontoon boat.

You're getting off to a great start, almost all of us started catching fish
on plastics, and I can remember for years having only a tacklebox of culprits worms , no other lures at all.

Those spring months you mentioned are great, but all summer can be steady and fun once you get the hang of where they are relating to weather.

I have learned that I actually enjoy watching the pros catch fish on tv. Mainly because I now know how exciting it is to hook into a fish.

I finally started using soft plastics a lot more and making them my go to bait
I don't only use crankbaits
I can cast a baitcaster
I learned that this forum is the best one out there
Fish like to annoy you by jumping where you just where
Whenever a fish jumps its a carp, otherwise I would go mad

put your head down, grit your teeth, and keep hammering you'll likely catch the best bass of the year on the day with the most miserable weather..

That gas at $4 a gallon doesn't stop me from driving 700 miles to fish.

How to do a halo-wrap on a rod

Stren braid's overpriced

Suffix braid is awesome

I still prefer good ol' mono to any of the superlines

Pickeral have teeth.

Important info, there.

I learned to take Bama's camera from him before I go to sleep. And that big lures will catch small fish. And little baits will catch big fish.

I think the biggest technique for me this year was the drop shot. I tried it before this year, but didn't like it because I was not doing it right. This year I caught many, many bass on it and that was my go to technique. I remember fishing with a guy in May on Saint Clair and I asked him, "do you think the drop shot will work here?" (we were in 6'). HAHA, I threw it in and started catching fish faster than they were coming on tubes. Before I had been told it was just a vertical presentation for deep water like in the Saint Clair River or Lake Erie. It worked so well that it out fished everything else even fishing beds for us.

After that I started fishing a few tournaments this year. I learned that the draw # is very important, being 64 out of 68 boats fishing for spawning bass on a <1000 acre lake = no chance. I learned that the small tournaments are fun, but the prefishing by myself can be even better since there is no pressure. I also learned that I am not ready to fish with the big guns either. I don't have as many skills in my arsenal, not good enough at patterning fish fast enough, and not enough time/money to prefish properly. We did win one against some of the top local pros, but when one came to my "home" lake in our league he spanked us.

I learned how bad it sucks when you spear a wave; the hard way. If you have not done this, it is a lot worse than anything you might read about it.

Probably a lot more things I have not thought about yet too.

Yep. Wiser words were never said. Fish hate a beautiful day.

I learned that the more you learn, you still need to learn nearly twice as much as before. Once you figure you know it all, you're really in big trouble.

I can't say how much that helped me this year . When noboby else was catching fish I would pull them in on a spinner worked along the bottom with a retrieve that was just fast enough to turn the blades and give it a little flutter and pause every so often .

So much. First, I learned that slow rolling a spinnerbait is not just reeling it slow, but going so slow that I actually felt the bottom contours under the water.

Flipping. I'm getting better at that. Not perfected.

Walking the dog. Better, definitely not perfected.

Sometimes, color does make a difference.

Not sticking to a technique that's worked in the past but is not working anymore -- changing up more!

Catching fish other than bass can be fun!

Default 90% in 10%

I've learnt that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water.

I learned that night fishing was more enjoyable then I thought and big bass can be caught at night especially on a hard to fish lake for me. Well I think Doc, Lowrider, and Mont Lunker get them during the day. Maybe this next year I might get me one of those Ten pounders from their back yard hole.

Well i have to say that was the Drop Shot. I talked allot of Sh&2 about it. But after i mastered it. It became the most used rig of 2008 for me. Even more than the Sassy Shad. I am going to work on power fishing in 2009 with monster baits. Which i have been buying allot of as of late.

never used a drop shot hardly any, but i take it you have to learn how to fish it or maybe where or when?

Would you be so kind to steer a guy in the direction to learn how to find that 10% water$. This site is great for information and maybe if I get to fish our fire department fishing tourny we have every so often it may pay off.

I did research night fishing and got me a 8.64 in August when it was so hot to fish during the day, now if I can keep gaining knowledge maybe I venture into a tourny on Degray or Ouachita this coming spring/summer would be fun I do think.
