Check out my home made crank
My newest creation. Flat-sided, coffin billed, cedar crankbait. Runs 4-6 feet. No rattle and a tight wobble for finicky bass. Length is 2.5 inches. Polished metal lip for flash. I've thrown it once, but i need to add a split ring to the line tie. Tell me what you think.

Looks good. Split ring or snap for the line tie should help.

Nice work. Did you carve it out, or buy the body?

I carved it from cedar and made the lip from a peice off of some old equipment I use at work. Everything is handmade (except the hardware). I noticed some yellowing around the epoxy on the lip. That only showed up in the pic for some reason...can't see it in person.

Yes, I used 5 minute apoxy and I'm sure that's what is causing the yellow. I'm not sure though if it's the actual epoxy, or if the epoxy is having some effect either on the paint or on the clear coat. There are 3 layers of paint and 3 layers of clear coat on it and the yellow has still shown through, so i'm stumped.
I'm using acrylic paint Stroz. Also, I'm thinking about tryin to make a few bucks on the side by doing it, so keep that in mind! lol |

5 minute tends to yellow. try devcon 2 ton. The epoxy just yellows, its all i know... i think it is like a reaction to light, not sure.
I'm surprised, that looks like normal airbrush paint to me

I doubt that the epoxy is reacting with your acrylic paint. There are topcoats made of an epoxy/acrylic mix. I agree with the Devcon comment. I used it a few weeks ago. And have used my prop bait several times and its still perfectly clear (aside from teeth marks). It takes years of epoxy being exposed to the elements before it will yellow. And normally it only yellows in areas that excessive amounts of epoxy were used.

That is mighty fine work!
I too have heard of the yellowing. I think that the 30 minute devcon will resolve the yellow issue if properly mixed. I usually mix for twice the recommended time to ensure both parts are thourouhly mixed.

I appreciate the help fellas. I've used the epoxy for several different things, but never had it yellow like this. It may be due to a build up in that seam, or maybe I didnt' let it dry long enough. But, i'm sure ole' bucket mouth won't notice it.

that is a very nice looking crankbait to be sure....but i have one stupid question?....you touched on your technique, but you didn't elaborate on how did you get the finish to look like scales on there?.....

That bait looks really good, if thats your first I can't wait to see the next couple baits you do. Is your lip aluminum by chance, your yellow tint may be caused by the epoxies reaction to it.

Epoxy doesnt really dry. It cures. It wont reach full hardness for 5 to 7 days. And it will continue to off-gas for its entire life. Even 30 years from now.....like an old car dashboard still will.
The yellowing like you said was most likely due to build up.

Not so sure epoxy reacts with aluminum. Maybe if its coated. There are a lot of parts on the wing structure of F15's that have an aluminum/glass/epoxy bond. I doubt they would use that combo if there were any reactions. Epoxy/carbon/aluminum...then theres a galvanic reaction.

It's approximately 3/8. Thanks for all the comments. I'm currently repainting about 10 cranks for some buddies of mine. I'll post pics when i get them done.
