Contrary to popular belief and perception, Cinco de Mayo is not the celebration of Mexican independence from Spain.

It is the celebration of a battle that Mexico won (with the odds against them)
against the French.

Mexico's independence day is in September, the 16th if I am not mistaken.

Now with that said, by no means would I deny anyone an excuse to exercise our freedom to party and have a few brews.

Riddle: Is there a 4th of July in England?

There is a 4th of July everywhere.... It just isn't a holiday!

You are absolutely correct. Oddly, Cinco de Mayo is pretty much only celebrated in the U.S. The Mexican state of Puebla, where the battle was fought, also recognizes the day.

The Irish think that the sun rising makes a drinking holiday, and another one for the sun setting...

And there is NOTHING wrong with celebrating a holiday, I think we need more of them to be honest about it.
And congrats islandbass, you are correct my friend.
