Is the spool tension set too tight? That'd be my first guess, especially if you're new to baitcasters and don't know what you're doing.

Do you have more than 15 feet of line on it?
Like BB144 said, my first guess would be spool tension. If you push the spool release button, and the lure doesn't fall at all without you moving the rod, that's probably your problem.

Sounds like a lube job is in order. I'd start with some Quantum Hot Sauce and the oil location guide for the Shimano. Even if the brakes were just too tight a periodic lube job seems to be in order for all reels. Doubt this is it but if you have dissembled it recently with line on, make the line isnt caught in between the edge of the spool and the reel housing.

FYI Shimano won't support the reel once the you put on the Hot Sauce.

A Calcutta 50 is a very small reel and it will not cast as far as a "normal" sized bass reel like the 100-200 sizes. I had a 50 and it was a great reel, just limited because of its size. That being said it should cast pretty good and is very well built reel. Aside from the spool tension and brake setting I don't know what would make it cast that short.

Any loops in the line or any digging in on the spool? If it is not the tension knob, I would consider stripping the line out 30 or 40 foot, reeling it back up and trying again.
