Default Which rod for crankin ?

Just got a new Shimano Citica and would like some suggestions on which rod you would put it on for tossing medium sized crankbaits.

Thanks

OK, Merlyn, just lettin' 'ya know, that reel kicks! I have my Citica matched up on a St.Croix Premier Crankbait and I love that for a crankin' rod! You can toss a crank on that rod all day and never hurt a muscle on any of your limbs...

Here is the site if you want to browse: http://www.stcroixrod.com/

Welcome to the forum!

Medium cranks? I'd look at a 6-6 M action. I throw mediun cranks on a 6-6 M action Falcon Low Rider.

Spinning Gear! I'm going with a BPS Bionic Blade for my crank rod.

7 foot medium action lews speed stick..this is one of the best sticks i have found to chunk mid sized cranks..if you are looking to size up to deep divers go with a mh action cranking stick you'll need the back bone to chunk the 1/2-3/4 oz cranks any distance..

what gear ratio shyster-mano did ya get??.. if it is over a 5.5 it's too fast..i know you were asking about one on UB..-i get around the web-

lunker you kill me a shyster on a st crow PLEASE!!!...

Ok Zook, let's get this straight, it's pronounced "Croy", and these sticks kick some serious Fanny! Hand made, each one, right here in the U.S. of A.!

Each Croix is hand-crafted in the USA. Great parts, all assembled right here...

I have a couple of speed sticks and a tennessee handle lews. I thought they went out of bussiness in the late 1980's? I gogled them and found nothing. Fish2win

Couple guys I know are using the Kistler Crank Bait Special 6' 6" Medium or the 7' Medium (can't remember the length). Very soft tip with excellent sensation due to the graphite and the handle design. Run in the $140 range.

Zook it would be nice to know. Thats about what they sold for new in the 1980's. I would be a player for a couple of Tennessee Handle spinning rods. It was all I used back in the day. Over the years one by one they have fallen by the way side except for 1 6 footer. Fish2win

I was thinking about trying a glass rod this year or one of these bad mambo jambos:

Anybody using glass rods? Forgive me if the Lew's is, I'm not familiar with it.

It does look like some goofy spincast rod handle.

Even though Glass rods are touted for being more "forgiving" on crankbaits, I find them to be "heavy". That will wear you down pretty quickly when you are on an all day crankbait foray. I have a 7' Pinnacle composite (graphite/glass combo), and 7' Allstar medium light graphite that I use for the exclusively for cranking (I have a couple of more multipurpose graphite rods that get some limited cranking occasionally). The rods have enough "give" that they don't overpower the bait on a hookset. My favorite cranking reels are Lew's Speed Spools model BB1NG. These do not have the old "v" Spool, so I got adequate line capacity in the 10-12 pound range. They have the 4.8:1 retrieve ratio which I find to be just about the perfect ratio for medium to deep divers. The "palming side" plate and the lighter rods make it easier on my wrists and elbows when I do some serious cranking.

I like medium action on Crankbaits. Except when it comes to Deep Divers. I perfer the stiffest Rod i can find.

lil moose
i actually move up one size for deep crankers. but here is the problem i have. dt series-dt 10,dt16- baits are quite possably the heaviest crank baits i have ever thrown. poes, manns, lucky craft, norman all are in the 1/2oz to 5/8 oz size..even the one ounce fat free shad does not stress the rods as much as the dt 16 does up on casting.. the only rod i would use to throw a dt 10-dt 16 is a american rodsmith cranking stick it is a fat, heavy, graphite rod that is limber as a willow branch..problem is every time you switch back to your regular rods after the american rodsmith stick you tend to back lash the first cast..

Me too, Bob. I just picked up a Falcon Cara 7' MH for big, deep cranks. Used it for the first time yesterday and love it.

Those Cara's are some good rods, Rebbasser. One of my buddies up in Tulsa uses Cara's exclusively. He fishes the the deep divers on a medium witha fast tip (7'). I used his a couple of times and found myself wishing I would've bought a couple of them (still on the list!)

I use a 7' medium and MH BPS crankin sticks. I have had them the longest of any rod I have kept so far.I got a Falcon Mark Davis glass rod, but it is heavy in weight, I don't use it much. P N J
