no hookups
I need help guys, I went to a pond near my house yesterday and I decided to try some 5" tiki sticks. I rigged then weightless w/ a regular 2/0 offset worm hook. I got plenty of hits, but no hookups, so I went out today and got some 3/0 offset worm hooks will this solve my problem?
Thanks in advance!

First make sure the hooks are sharp, second what kind of line are you using? Third make sure you arent trying to set the hook too late or too early. Do you use sweeping hooksets or straight up?

We need a little more info. What type of rod are and line are you using? Too much flexability in the rod and too much stretch in the line is not going to allow a good hook set. I use a 6 1/2 or 7 foot rod of medium heavy action. I also use 14 to 20 pound line depending on the amount of cover I am fishing in. Using 3/0 hooks should be good. T rigged and the point of the hook resting on the back of the worm. In other words, run the hook through the worm so that the point is exposed, but laying tight and flat against the worm so as to be fairly weedless, but allow easier hookups.

^those are all valid points, but have you taken into consideration that bluegill have eyes bigger than their stomaches?

I used to have the same problem using the 2/0's. It helped a lot when i switched to the 3/0's. I bet you get a better hookup ratio.

if that doesnt work, try downsizing your offering to like a 3" senko type bait (not sure if tiki makes on) and you will hook a lot more fish

Please refer to the "Braid with a fluorocarbon leader" thread. Properly employed, this combo will greatly aid strike detection and far more positive hooksets. FR |

Redneck, if you are fishing dingy to muddy water dont worry about the flouro leader and go straight to braid. Mono has a lot of stretch, which can lead to poor hooksets. I would also use a 6'6" rod if possible.

I use an EWG simply because Tikis are bulky baits, and you don't want to get the throat of the hook clogged up with plastic. You also might consider going to a medium heavy rod instead of a medium-the stiffer rod helps get a better hookset.

A) You might be setting the hook to fast
B) Hooks are to BIG C) Change to a smaller worm |

No offense, but I think it's more likely a technique thing rather than the hook size. If they can take a 5" Senko, they can take a size 2 hook. That said, downsizing to a 3 is probably best.
