Default New personal best

My lovely wife allowed me to go fishing tonight so I decided to hit the pond down the street. I started out throwing a white fluke and got some big topwater hits. Had more misses that hooks so I switched to a smaller worm. This gave me a few more hooks but I was still looking for that larger fish. I saw some big swirls near my bait but they just wouldn't take it. All the fish I had landed so far were 1 to 1.5 lbs. I had 7 fish in about an hour and half. The wife called and asked if I was coming back home soon. I took this as I needed to go back so I decided to make one more cast. But I decided to change to a thicker shorter bait. I threw a super hog from zoom. It hit the water and I danced it about a foot and then bam. A very large explosion. I set the hook and wrestled the beast back to the bank. I couldn't tell how big it was due to the weeds it brought with it. Once I uncovered the weeds I saw that I could almost fit my entire fist into his mouth. I knew then I had beaten my personal best. It is not a hawg but at least I broke the 2 lb mark. I am so going out to this pond again in the morning.

2 lbs 3 oz. woohoo

I also caught what I think is a pickerel. Can you guys tell me what this is?

Typical of what a fish looks like when I landed them.

After you clean off the weeds, the fish can be small.

You’re right on. When I lived at the OBX, the rivers and lakes were prevalent with those look-alike pike, I did not like catching those bastards, the big ones would most always destroy my equipment.

I noticed a thin and long fish launching themselves at my bait but rarely getting hooked. I was very surprised when I landed this one. It was covered with moss and I jumped a foot when I uncovered it because I was expecting a bass. I looked for teeth and didn't see any like I would have if I caught a pike.

I did lose another hook at the knot that evening. So I cut off the fluoro and the hivis orange braid and just finished the night out with moss green power pro braid.

FnG, congrats on the new PB, I jost lost mine the other night, at the boat too... Anyways, I do think that is a pickerel, which I also think is a relative to Pike.

I am finding out that bullfrog color is my new best friend next to cotton candy. I am catching a ton of fish in our ponds using bullfrog color finesse worms. The other day was the first time using the super hog. I, personally, think the super hog better than the brush hog. The super hog is a bit shorter and "beefier" and easier for me to cast with my weightless setup.

I don't drink anymore. The night became very hot and humid pretty quickly and the sweat was in my eyes. I also wasn't prepared for the flash. The second picture I took was better. I thought I loaded it instead.

I know. I realized I looked tired or drunk when I posted the picture.
Is this one better?

Nice job on the bass! That other one looks like a pike to me, maybe a chain pickerel. Either way if the lake has a bunch of those then Vanish might not be your problem. I use the P-Line leaders and those bastards cut right through it like nothing. As soon as you feel the tick, tick and then put pressure on them or swing at them there is nothing there. The lakes up here a full of them, sometimes I'll catch more pike than bass!

Gotta agree with that as soon as the line hits their teeth it just pops

Dad gum FnG, been fishing in alabama my whole life and I've nver seen a pickeral around here but thats what it is. See the marks on the side look like chain links, hence the name chain pickeral. They are superb eating if you can get past the bones.

I had never seen one either. This chain pickerel was a first for me. I do admit that I jumped back and said something that would have made me put a $1 in the swear jar when I pulled the weeds off of him.

Pickerel have been the majority of our catches lately , as the temps go down up here the bigger ones have been coming shallower They are a heck of a fight if their teeth don't get the line . And we have mostly been fishing yum dingers and sooies and wool hawg tails .

FnG - Good job on getting over the hump!!!! Keep on throwing brushhogs and you'll do alright!

Be carefull you don't stick your hand down in that mass of green. You may be surprised and get stuck by a pickerel or bowfin!!!

Your second fish looks like a pike to me. I would guess that it had some pretty good teeth a quite a bit of slime on it.
Just my thought.
