First Fly Fish...

So I went to a local lake and gave the old fly rod its first try. I am still getin the casting mechanics down, but it is fun. I did cathc my first fish on a fly... caught 3 small bluegill... they were fat as hell but really short. I was only there an hour as I was just stoppin in on my way home from work and wanted to get in some surface fly action. I would have liekd to spend more time as i was catchin fish pretty regularly once i stopped tangling my casts... but teh wife was expecting me for Breakfast.

I know 3 tiny gills isnt much to brag about, but I finally got the month old skunk off me...

Congrats on the catch. I can remember fly fishing for gills when I was a teenager. I used to use the small cork poppers. Funny they would only go for the ones with the rubber legs and not the plain body ones. Never did try flies but drifted the lake with a Muddler Minnow and some split shots. Used to catch walleyes with that set up.

Yeah... the fly i was using was a betts bream getter or something like that... it is basically a black rubber body that floats shaped like a spider or ant or something with 6 white rubber legs...

fun ain't it? now ya gotta get 4 more fly rods to catch up with me, hahaha. just like baitcasters, one for every kind of lure made. glad oyu had fun pal. now go get em again.

That's awesome. I need to get a new reel for my fly rod. Mine broke a while back. I'm so jealous...

Guys, I'm just a part time flyfisher some bear with me...

I have always had problems with the setup. Perhaps in the past I tried casting flies that were poorly adjusted for the combination of setup.

I was just outside with my new 8 wt and it cast a hair bug effortlessly. Its a huge difference from my usual attempts, where I can beat the line out, but its a lot of work.

It occurs to me that this setup was all done at BPS...

So, how do they match the line, leader and rod? Is it as simple as never wavering from buying an 8 wt line, 8 wt leader, 8 wt tippet and putting it on an 8 wt rod with no exceptions?

From what I gather from my little research... line weight and rod weight matching is a big deal... but the leader and tippet arent as big a deal... and it seems that lighter weight line does not cast a BIG fly very well... but that is about as far as my knowledge goes right now...

I am finding myself doing a whole lot of Roll Casting lately to keep from destroying my flies...

i use 8 pound floating line with 6 pound mono, bout 6 foot leader. and i mostly use popping flies from wally world. i ain't the greatest at "flipping" the fly rod. which is different than what you do with a baitcaster now ok? but i do alright by me. hard to "tell" someone how to cast with a fly rod except to say it is ALL in the wrist. that is where you get the perfection in. like i said, i ain't good at helping you billy. but i DO KNOW it is in the srist. hope it was somewhat helpful. as for different flies.........................i give up, hahaha.
