Default Goodbye Papaw

I got the call this morning that Papaw had lost the fight to cancer. In many ways he had been more of a dad than a grandfather. I lived with my grandparents from the time I was 5 until I left for the Marines.

When I have talked about fishing and my "Dad" on here, it was always a reference to him. He is the one who taught me hunt, to fish, and to respect every living thing. I tried to explain the concept of respecting somthing you hunt ot my son the other day. My Papaw taught me that respecting a deer meant a clean shot that would not cause it to suffer. If you did not have a shot that would drop it, then you were not meant to shoot it.

He taught me Yes Sir, and Yes Ma'am. (And yes had belt to remind me should I forget)

At 16 I had grown taller than him and ONE time felt that I could take him. I remember him saying to me, "Son, I bet you think you are too big for me to turn you over my knee." Like a dumbass, I answered "yes I do" and puffed out my chest. That was when he said, "Then you are ready for this." I never saw the right hand, I was too focused on the cane he let drop to the ground. But by God, I felt it. I can never hear the Garth Brooks song "The night I called the old man out" without rubbing my chin and making a face that is somewhat a smile and a frown.

I know I am rambling now, but needed to at least type out the words.
"Goodbye Papaw, I love you"

Actually Mallen, he was a mean SOB. Born in the depression, fought in 3 wars, drank everyday but Sunday. But, he taught me the fundamentals of what it took to be a man.

Sometimes the mean ones are the best in a lot of other ways.
My grandfather kept a stick above the doorway seperating the kitchen and dining room, and he knew how to use it. I still miss him

It's always tough to loose a loved one. Those that raised us, often had to find a balance between a heavy hand and a big heart. From the sounds of it, your Grand Dad did that, and you're the man you are because of him. May he rest in peace.

Sorry about your loss Cass. It seems to be raining around here on the glum end of the stick. My mom, who I lost last Tuesday, was in the army (& wore combat boots), adopted by one if the meanest women in south MS and she could be one mean cuss herself, but like you said, she pretty much raised me with the fundamentals and morales to be the man I am today. And I knew she loved me!

Isn't it funny how the "firm" (notice I didn't say mean) grandparents, parents are the ones we miss/respect the most.

To an old timer being firm and a good man go hand in hand.

sorry for your loss cass.

Cass...
Please accept my condolences for your GrandDad.
In a way He reminds me of the Patriarchs that I had in my life: -old school-
I would love to hear more about your GrandDad, if that's alright with you.

Thank You in advance.

Cass sorry to here that. I was raised by my grandparents. So i know how it feels. Grandpa introduced me to river fishing. That's the only fishing the oldman would do. Funny how you become the way your raised. One day when the rapture occurs will be home with the lord and our family. So this earthly thing is only temporary. I can't wait because Grandpa owes me a trip fishing when i see him. My regards go out to you & your family. Just realize he is not truly dead. He is now on the otherside waiting for you to bring that pole with yeahh!!!

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
Woody, I will later post a story my grandfather told me about a chance encounter with Joe Louis. One where my grandfather used an inappropriate word to describe a man of Joe's skin tone and the lesson he learned from it.
