slate calls is my thing
i use only stump jumper slates...they are custom turned from exotic wood's i use 3 kinds of strikers here. bloodwood, canarywood, and snakewood... alot of our turkey hunting takes all day... this is not a joke..literly start at 5 am and just do VERY soft calls every hour or so..99% of the turkey i get come in silent.. this public land bird fell to a canary wood pot with a bloodwood striker again public land birds that just took FOREVER to come in they were in sight for 4 hours... but intenet on fightin one other.. that is my brother "worm dirt" i don'y play well with others both myself and worm dirt use 10 gauges.. btw it was a 1.5 hour yak ride to get back to the truck... zooker

spro
read the post again all three birds were public land buzzards...a place guys mess with the birds for months... using a diaphram call only spooks them.. custom slate or box is the only way to get them.. zooker

Around here you got to get them before the poachers do. To elaborate on what Zook said, there are times when can't call at all, or just purr a little and scratch around. My all time favorite hunt was one where i didn't even take a call out my pocket. I followed the bird several mornings and called but he'd hush and head out of the county as fast as he could. So, I started to just follow him, staying several hundred yards behind (by his gobbling) and found a place where he'd be crossing a creek (old tracks and fresh ones going both ways). Next time I went, i just set up at the creek and sure enough here he came. BOOM!
