Default Rapids & smallies on the Genesee River, NY

We went out on the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park, NY, Yesterday for some late season smallmouth bass fishing. The water was up about 6" compared with when Kevin, Yakviper, and I fished it in August. There was a big difference in water temperature too, at 43 degrees F.

This has become our favorite local destination, and despite that the smallies were a bit tight-lipped, the river didn't disappoint! We got to kayak through several chutes and there was NO getting out of the kayak and dragging through shallow areas for me today.

The bite was VERY light and we lost several fish, but ended catching seven between the three of us. We downsized to 1/8 oz tube jigs and Gitzit tube and found the fish more concentrated in the deeper and slower moving water at the middle to tail ends of pools.

Here's some pics of our fun and fish of the day:

Going in...

...up and out.

Nice fish! I got a little fast moving river kinda like that near me. Did you have a brush guard on the tubes? I've got a had time keeping what ever I'm throwing out of the rocks. I think a little wire brush guard might help.

Pools? Like pockets? Middle, tail end?

We did get caught up quite a bit. I've never used weedless guards on tubes before, but I know some folks do. We found that we could get the tubes down on the bottom with 1/8 oz. tube jig heads in the slower moving and 8-10ft pools where we caught most of the fish - that seemed to keep us from getting hung up too much compared with 1/4 oz. However, we didn't have a lot of downed wood to contend with, just rocks.
