Default killers remorse? or not?

Reading TN_bassin"s thread about his dog got me thinking about road kill in general. In the past I have lost 2 dogs and a horse to driveby's. Over the course of many years I have only hit 1 dog and I did stop and try to help but it was too late. However I have hit and killed many other animals and these are the typical thoughts than run through my head..am I evil?
Rabbit....don't even slow down
Squirrell....what was that?
Armadillo....thunk
Possum.....huh
Racoon....waste of a good pelt
Fox........quick my a$$
Buzzard..........it's your own fault pal
Various crossing birds......what are the odds
Turtle....splat
Deer....check alignment....and body
Beaver....busy that
Frog...splat
To what level does a life form have to reach to merit anguish at its passing?

I will slow down and do my best to avoid anything I see. I have gotten out of my truck to help a duck and her ducklings cross a road.

Sounds more like Granny sent you for supplies so she could start the VITTLES.

I have difficulty killing anything I'm not eating.
But I've heard more than one story of people getting out to remove a carcas to find out the animal is still alive......and pissed off!

@NFE.......I am not one of those hateful people that actually swerves to hit something, my first wife would bring home every wild accident victom she came across. In all those years I never managed to keep a single one of them alive...
@joedog...many ethnic groups will eat things that make my skin crawl.

I was just curious about how people react to such accidental deaths and where they draw the line between being sad and "oh well". As a teenager I used to feed the bait monkey by running a trap line for coons and fox every winter. Even way back then a XX coon hide would bring $25+ and a good red fox $40+. Every other sat the hide buyer would come by, it wasn't unusual for us to have 20-30 hides to sell. $900 a month was a lot of money for a 14 yr old. Anyway.......we inevitably got a lot of by-catch that refused to be humanely released and so from an early age I developed my own personal threshold for dead animals that hurt my feelings and those that didn't.

Interesting...the other day you posted of throwing Grass Carp on the bank to irk the uptight duck feeding lady. Surely those carp must have died an agonizing choking death, and not even by accident. That's my point..you have drawn a moral line in the sand. Grass carp and whatever else that falls below that line for you can die without question. I'm certainly not trying to get another OTTER dispute cooking, just curious where my line falls in relation to anyone else that cares to post. (btw I can kill carp with a smile without a hint of sadness)

@wally I'm guessing you had turtles as pets as a child which moves them up the line by default.

That was 25 years ago. I was a young kid who really hadn't pondered the mysteries of life, death, right, and wrong. I would never do that now, even to a grass carp. If I am going to keep a fish, I try to kill it in a humane way. For the love of God, I have four fish in an aquarium at home that have lived 5-7 years over what they were supposed to. I would love to get rid of them, but I think the old flush-a-roo is wrong. So I'm stuck with them until they set some new world record for fish longevity.

That's where I stand.

My line ends with insects, I try to respect life in general, but generally feel no remorse for killing a spider, ant, or other insects.

As I have gotten older, I have lost the killer instinct I once had. I do still hunt on occasion with the sole intent of providing food, but even that is less appealing than it once was. I try to be very careful driving and brake for any animal I see in the road. I find no joy in killing something for the sake of killing it and do my best not to accidentally kill anything. That said, my line is probably somewhere just after rodent.

I won't go out of my way to hit an animal. I will hit one if i have to to avoid an accident. When I was a young driver I hit a cat. I wasn't going to stop but I did. Good thing as there was a cop driving behind me. He made me knock on doors holding the cat and asking if it belonged to anyone. One lady opened up her door and screamed it was her cat. I didn't know what to do so i asked her if she would take money. She did and the cop arrested her. Got her for selling pu$$y.

I enjoy ripping little kitten's throats out with my teeth and watching them bleed to death.

Oh, and welcome back, Mallen....

Thanks, ssippi!

On subject, I do my best not to kill anything that doesn't need killing.
If I can avoid any animal on the road, I will. I decided not to swerve in a lot of cases. If something small runs out right in front of me, I leave it up to him whether he lives or dies.
If I swerve but take him out anyways...my fault. If I stay the course and run him over...his fault.
And I've often pulled over to escort a turtle to safety, as well.
Had a lil deer run into the side of my car last year. Pulled him off the road to see if he'd make it or not. He finally came to and took off like a bat outta hell

Well when I'm about to hit something small... Chipmunk, squirrell, opossum, rabbit, cat, etc... Instead of trying to miss it entirely I'll straddle it and if it's smart enough to keep it's head down and stop running then I figure it deserves to live... then again I drive a truck so I sit a little higher than a car would in that situation... I hit a squirrell not too long ago that didn't stop when I glided over him... I felt terrible afterwards.

Ya know what cracks me up every time I see it? Stoopid turkeys tryin to cross the road!
I'll be driving, and come up on a bunch of turkeys. The ones in the road...RUN BACK THE WAY THEY CAME!!!

I always picture the lead turkey saying "Ok, The coast is clear. Let's move it on out. SINGLE FILE NOW! SINGLE FILE!!!!!"

The first 2-3 slow walk their way halfway into the lane, a car comes and "RETREAT!!!!!!!!!!!".

Once you go on by, they stand there forever, waiting to go again!
I'm amazed they don't just set up camp, and live in the ditch

That "keep its head down" approach reminds me of the way my Uncles and cousins looked at getting a coon out of a tree after the dogs had treed it. Most people just shot em in the head with a 22 short.....but they lived by the creed "give everything a fighten chance" so they would just knock um down with some rock salt packed in a 410 shell. Sure they came down amongst 5 or 10 worked up black and tans but at least they had the chance to whoop all the dogs a$$'s and walk off if they wanted to.

Mmmmmmm.....Black & Tans, the drink, not the dog. Although, if it runs, walks, crawls, slithers, swims, or flies, it dies, I'll kill it, and I'll eat it!
