Default When two worlds collide - Minnows vs. Blue Gill

So Ive been living in my new place since Feb. Ever since Ive been feeding the blue gill in a small lake outside my back door.

The school has grown to about 100 or so. But now I have a small group of guppies and missouri minnows that also know when its feeding time.

Litterally when they hear the noise of my sliding glass door you can see a bunch of V's of fish darting accross the surface to the spot where I feed them.

Today there were casualty's. A few good minnows went on to a better place.

If you look close there are 3 minnows flying in the air in this one:

Just a cool shot:

And a random sunrise photo from my failed snook fishing trip this morning. Opening day skunk.

I can only spot 2 of the flying minnows in the first picture.

Atleast you are home in time to watch some college football!

Actually watching soccer?

The third minnow is in the lower center of the screen, on the right edge of the blue gill swirl. Its facing the screen (90 degree angle as compared to the other minnows).

AHA! Got it!

Good pictures, it looks like the fish have a thin layer of water surrounding them as they jump.

JB: To funny!!

that pic would also be good for a "JAWS" theme picture. Kind of like a bloody tuna in its mouth.

Reminds me of when I lived back in Jax., Fl. We moved into a new residential complex, and our house was the last one on a cul-de-sac. There was a drainage/retention pond right behind our house. When we first moved in, the bull-frogs were so loud at night right outside my window that they would keep me up sometimes.

One afternoon I went black bass fishing and caught 2-3 1#'ers. I decided to take them home with me and release them in the pond. At this time the pond was crystal clear, and there was very little vegetation.

After putting them in, I realized that besides the frogs, there was no real food source for them. The next time I went fishing I again caught several smaller fish and kept them for the pond at home. On the way home, I stopped & bought a dozen shiner. I released the bass & the shiner into the pond. Several months later I began to go out and feed the shiner. They would come up for bread, canned corn, or anything else that I threw out there. There was this one bass, which became accustomed to "feeding" time & would come right to the shore, basically right at my feet, and turn so that he was facing outwards toward the feeding fish. Inevitably, he would wait until one of them was not paying attention and he would shoot out and attack the school. He would swim right back to my feet with the shiner in his mouth, and then turn and face outwards waiting for his next attack. As the months pressed on, I would show my friends and neighbors the tricks that I had taught the bass. Only I modified how I would feed him. I would now take my bb gun out with me. I would throw one piece of bread out and as the fish attacked it, I would shoot into the group. I would wound 1 or sometimes 2, and Mr. Bass was always right there at my feet ready to go out and get them. When I finally moved out of that house (2 years later), I would estimate he was 4 lbs. easily, if not better. The neat thing was I could walk along the shore line and he would follow me! I swear that fish could recognize me. I moved out of there in '92. When I went back about 3 years ago (late 2004), the vegetation had grown, and the moss/algae/aquatic plants had grown, so much that there was not a spot you could see the bottom at. Plus, you had to fight your way through giant weeds to even get close to the water. I have no idea if he is still alive in there.. I can only hope. I wonder how big he might be now? Impossible to launch a boat as it is on private property, and no chance of fishing from the bank. I hope he is fat, happy, and being taken care of.

Kawa: Sounds awesome. Wish I had a bass like that. Last pet bass I had ate everything in my aquarium. It ate so much at once that it couldnt even float. It would literally sit on a rock and do nothing after it ate.
