Default Boat Insurance

Insurance is one of the unpleasant expenses associated with fishing. The good news is that I just had what is probably the best insurance experience I have ever had, and I thought I should tell you guys about it.

In 2008 I switched my boat insurance from USAA to BoatUS and saved $185, improving my coverage as I did so. I just talked to Worldwide Marine Underwriters, and they shaved another $60+ from my premiums, again, improving my coverage.

If you are in the market for insurance for your boat (they only do boats), I highly recommend Worldwide Marine. Bob Luellen is the guy to talk to and he can be reached at 800-339-1235. It is cold in Michigan this time of year, so he isn't fishing anyway.

I'm with Bob too, no complaints at all and great people to work with.

I know a lot of tournaments do, as well as if you have a loan on the boat the lien-holder will require one. I don't know if ANY state has required insurance, otherwise.

my state is by horsepower. 50hp and over requires at least liability. my rig cost me a whopping $12 a month for full coverage including the trailer, so why not have it?

i switched last winter to world wide also.. they take in account tackle being stolen.. lets face it some of us have more money tied up in tackle than we have in the boat..

Just curious but what is your coverage and what's your premium? You pay once a year? Or monthly? A rough idea would help.

I'm with State Farm, it only cost me $6.00 a month. I can live with this, everthing I have is insured with them. Denny

Ok, here we go...

The first part you will have to get Bob to explain, because I am sure he can do a better job than I can. There is an "agreed value" on my boat, with no depreciation, of 36,500. If the boat is totaled, that is what I get paid, not the depreciated value of the boat. If you buy a $50,000 boat and it is stolen a year later and the insurance company values it it at 38,000, you still owe $12 grand on a boat that you no longer own. I am sure this coverage is more expensive, but worth it to me.

I have $300,000 in liability (tournament requirement) and the same in uninsured boaters. $2500 in equipment coverage (in case stuff gets stolen). Unlimited roadside assistance. $500 on water towing.

$347/yr. Payment plans are available. That is for a 2004 boat with a 225 Opti. Your mileage may vary.

Hope that helps.

That's a good price for the coverage. Thanks for sharing.

I'm with Progressive and this thread is timely. I need to increase my Liability coverage for the tournaments out here in Georgia/Alabama. Right now I have 25K Liability, 25K personal injury, replacement coverage on a 12 year old boat and 1K contents for $254/yr. I believe that this Bob Luellen might be able to help me increase my coverage and compete with my current rate.

Yes, I'm sure he can help you...and YES you should have insurance on your rig even if you don't fish tourneys.. The really good thing about working with Bob's company is the "Agreed Value"..this value is what you agree on...so if you have made some modifications to your boat and know that you need more than what it books for you can get it covered, whereas most insurance companies do a depreciated value based on NADA book and you end up getting short changed if you have a total-loss.

I think the biggest PRO is simply peace of mind...
