Trial and Error:
Take it off, re spool some Mono or Floro, re-cast and see if the noise comes back, thats one sure fire way to find out if. In fact the reel just doesn't handle well with a heavier line, or if maybe a gear/bushing Or BB has gone out on you, Is this a energy PT model? curious to know cause i was looking at buying one. A few other questions, Did you store this reel over the winter months with the star drag maxed out on the tension? have you re- oiled it since last year? If it is a PT model, what one? the Holographic paint Energy, the gray tone salt water version, The Electric blue (KVD), or the new 2009 Brilliant silver edition PT?

i have re-oiled it and its the holographic painted one. its a great reel i had 8 pound mono it before and used it for finesse fishing mostly. here in central florida right now it is about 80 degrees out so i have been fishing with it all year

If you have just stripped it down and recently restrung it, then you might have something stuck in the spool. Before restringing it, I would pull the spool and look for FOD

Daniel, the noise is normal with braid. Nothing to be concerned with. Braid is not smooth like mono thus the noise.

If the noise is a constant whirring noise than it is the braid rubbing against the guides and the bail. But just to be safe, I would try to respool with mono or fluoro just to see if it makes the same noise. If it is just the braid rubbing, remember that the more strands in the braid, the less noise. Suffix is a 6 strand braid and Power Pro is a 4 strand braid.

braid will sound different than mono for sure. i too would say it is nothing to worry about.

Looks like we have another aircraft builder on our hands (I work for Boeing). FOD, for those who don't know is "Foreign Object Deficiency" or sometimes "Foreign Object Defect".

Foreign Object or Debris in my case Bob. I work on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and am used to having to do the FOD search on the vehicle when driving onto the flight line.
